前作「TAKE OFF AND LANDING」がコラージュ、サンプリング多用による
足し算の極みだとしたら、
「LOVEBEAT」は引き算の極み。
無駄な音は一切排し、限られた手駒で最良の響きを得ようとしています。

ただどちらも振れ幅いっぱいまで突き詰めているので、
次回作がどうなるのか心配。「過剰」「必要最低限」の次は…
ということでコンセプト的には手詰まり感もあります。
ぜひ次回作はシリアスになりすぎないで、
「楽しさ」で振れ幅いっぱいいってほしい気もします。

電気時代、とくに前期は
ややお子様向けなシンセ音を好んでいた
「まりん」こと砂原良徳ですが、
全身テクノ人間の石野卓球に比べると
作曲ペースがほぼ半分かそれ以下ということもあり、
「控え」的存在に甘んじていたことは否めません。

電気後期と一部重なるソロ時代に入ると
一転してモンドっぽい音を出し始めましたが、
この時期、秀作には事欠かないものの
（1stのサンディが歌う"Clouds across the Moon"とか
2ndの"Journey beyond the Stars"〜"No Sun"あたり）
正直、いささか背伸び感があったというか、
「大人」な音楽を目指すあまり
本来の方向からやや逸脱していたような気がします。

ところが、このアルバムに至って、
何やら彼が本来出したかった音を
ほぼ自由自在に出せているというか、
今までの作品に多かれ少なかれあった
「空回り感」がどこにも見当たらないというか、
一皮剥けたという手ごたえのようなものが
確実に伝わってくるのです。

細野晴臣がクラフトワークの音を出すと
ちょっとこれと似た感じになるのかもしれませんが、
ある意味、両者がなしえなかった境地を
地味ながら大胆に切り開きつつあるとも言えます。

ここまで突き抜けた音を出してしまうと、
次がどうなるのかいささか不安ではありますが、
YMOでいえば『BGM』『テクノデリック』級の傑作を
これからも何枚も出してくれることを切に願う次第です。

近年で最も優れたエレクトロニックミュージックのアルバムはこのlovebeatではないだろうか。
この手の音楽で全編通して聴けるものは非常に少ないのだが、それを軽くクリアしてしまっているし、
また全てのトラックにおいて品位が損なわれていないことも奇跡的だ。
例えばiMacの女性的なフォルムをそのまま音源データ化したらこうなるんじゃないかというぐらい優美だ。
そして優美さと同時に情熱をも持ち合わせているこのアルバムは、最早ソウルミュージックだ。
carl craigなどに感じるファンクネスをこのアルバムにも感じる。
既に4年も前のアルバムになるわけだが、私はこれ以上のアルバムに出会えていない。
