前作・前々作の特にシングルヒットで再びポピュラリティーを取り戻した陽水氏は、その余裕からか、ここで大きな実験音楽のモードに入った。前々作から起用し出したBanana氏に、今回は全楽曲を委ねる形を取ったのである。その結果、陽水音楽の金字塔とでも言うべき作品が仕上がった。このアルバムはまさに人間国宝が創り上げた芸術作品と評できるレベルであり、聴く側も姿勢を正し、一音一音すべてもらさず全身を耳にして聴くべき作品である。それゆえ、「気軽に聴けて気軽に楽しめるアルバムではない」ため、セールス的にはまたまた不振に終わってしまった。後続のミリオンセラーアルバム「９．５カラット」こそが一般大衆の求める音であり、芸術的追求と売り上げの数値が比例しないのもまた「ポップシーンの習い」の１つなのかもしれない。アナログ時代のＡ面はアップテンポな曲を並べ、Ｂ面は（CDではM6から）バラードを並べた構成だが、Ａ面最後（M5)には本当に恐れ入った。なんでこんな凄い曲が作れるのだろうか？個人的には「氷の世界」の次に敬愛する曲でもある。さらに余談だが「医者におびえる子どものようだ」の部分は、初めて聴いた時は私もまだ本当の苦労知らずの若造で実感があまりなかったが、今聴くと妙にリアルで怖い。さらに蛇足をお許し願うが、その当時、ちょうどこのアルバムが発売された頃、私は村上春樹の「ノルウェーの森」ほぼそのままの生活をしていた。違うのはその時交際していた女性が私から去ろうとしたことだ。さらに「Beatles」の「No Reply」のような事件が起きて、彼女の家の前から空しく引き上げる時、車の中で流れていたのがこのアルバムだった。だから今でもこのアルバムを聴くとあの日々を思い出すのだ。ところでバラードのM7は彼の全バラードの中でも最高峰であり、あのスタンダードナンバー「星に願を」にも勝る名曲だ思う。「９．５カラット」や「Golden Best」 、最近では「Ballade Best」に酔いしれている人は、ぜひそれで終わりにせず、たとえどんなに時間がかかってもいいからこの崇高な世界にたどり着いて欲しい。

すごい、の一言に尽きるアルバム。正に天才にのみ作れる世界だ。
アルバム・ジャケットに象徴されるシュールな世界を暗示する「カメレオンの恋」、陽水が時折見せる日常のフラストレーションを歌にした(他には「俺の事務所はCAMP」「MY HOUSE」など)「この頃,妙だ 」等名曲揃い。
中でも究極は「バレリーナ」。詩とメロディーの理想的な融合。ジャン・コクトーの詩にポール・マッカートニーが曲を付けた(想像も出来ないが)様な完璧な楽曲。
ユーミンをして「日本の宝」と云わしめ、中島みゆきをして「あの人はバケモノ」と唸らせた天才・井上陽水。その真髄、とも云うべき最高のアルバムだ。
セールス的には不振だった作品だが、そも天才の本領が広く大衆の理解を得られるずもなく、売れなかったと云う事実が、かえって本作の孤高とも云うべき価値を逆説的に証明している、とも云えるだろう。

地味な作品だけどこれをベストに推す人は必ずいると断言できる、ジャストフィットするとはまってしまうアルバム。全体にプログレシッブロックのアルバムのようなムードがあり、それが好きな人はよりはまりやすいでしょう。アルバムを通してかなり緊張感が高く、とくに前半はＢＧＭとして聞き流すことができないほどの迫力というか個性があります。タイトル曲は至高の美しさを持った名曲。
