前作より評判の良い2nd。ダリル・ウェイとジョン・エサリッジのニ枚看板バンド。前作に比べて唄が減って、テクニカルインストアルバムと言った感じか。スリリングな曲もあるが、相変わらずほのぼのとしており気楽に楽しめる。前作に続きジャケットも狼がモチーフだが「強暴」というより「かわいい」と言った印象で、このバンドの音楽性を良く表している。

７３年発表の２ｎｄ。のっけからウェイの高速ヴァイオリン・プレイで突っ走り、それに応えるかの様にジョン・エサリッジも凄まじいソロを聞かせる。１ｓｔではヴォーカルと演奏をおのおの聞かせるというどっちつかずの内容で小さくまとまっていた感じだったが、本作は完全に演奏が主体。歌詞付きのヴォーカル・ナンバーは一曲のみと徹底した作品になった。エサリッジについてはまだリズム感が若干悪いものの、その後のプレイを彷佛とさせる名人芸的なジャズ・ロック風ソロを次々と聞かせていて非常に充実している。その反面、陰鬱で美しい旋律を持った名曲３．においてはそれこそ喧嘩常套的なかなり乱暴なソロを聞かせていて興味深い。メロディ部分においてはウェイのヴァイオリンとの美しいユニゾンを聞かせているだけにそのコントラストが強烈だ。『飽和点』のタイトルが付けられているように色々な意味でこのグループの限界が訪れていたのかもしれない。どちらにしてもウルフを聞くならこのアルバムで決まり。素晴しい演奏が楽しめる。

元カーヴド・エアのヴァイオリニスト、ダリル・ウエイ率いるWolfのセカンドアルバムです。1973年の作品。

デビュー作「ウルフ」では、70年代初頭のよき時代を感じさせるプログレサウンドを披露した彼らですが、デビュー作からわずか数ヶ月というタイミングで発売された本作では、さらに掘り下げた音作りが聴かれます。また、前作でプロデューサーを担当したイアン・マクドナルドの名前はクレジットから消えた影響なのかは定かではありませんが、前作で大半を占めたボーカルナンバーは大幅に減少し、ジャズロックの香りが充満したインスト中心の「聴かせる楽曲」が増えているのが特徴です。

1曲目の「The Ache」こそ、70年代初頭特有のボーカル入りのアートロック風ですが、ほかの曲はメンバーそれぞれの技量を生かしたものが中心で、なかなか聴かせます。特に標題曲の「Saturation Point」では、リズム隊が作りだす変拍子の合間を縫って、ジョン・エサーリッジの超絶ギターが響き渡るあたりが最大の聴きどころに。のちにエサーリッジがソフト・マシーンに加入することも、ここでのプレイを聴くとなるほどと納得できると思います。

確かにいま改めて聴くと随所に時代を感じてしまいますが、当時のジャズロックシーンを語るうえでは、欠かすことのできない重要作品です。
