最近のワイドショーで彼を主人公にしたミュージカルの話を耳にし、久々に取り出してみました。

印象的なイントロでノリのいいオープニングから訳もなく泣きたくなる名バラードのエンディングまで、本当にいうことなしのアルバムであることを改めて感じました。じっくりと解説を読んでみて、今更ながらばっちり私のツボであることを再認識。TOTOが大好き、PAGESも大好きなんですから、最高のスポンジケーキに豪華なデコレーションが施されているようなものです。
なにより、彼のソングライターとしての実力とボーカリストとしての魅力が十分発揮されている名作。

初めて聴いた１０代の頃よりももっと深く感じることができました。
この時代のAORアルバムをあれこれ引っ張り出して、それぞれの相関関係などをじっくりと紐解きたい気分です。Peter Allenよ、永遠なれ。
このようなレベルの高い作品を残されたこと、感謝します。

アナログ盤からCDに買い換えたい最有力候補の1枚だったが残念ながらずいぶん前に廃盤となっていた。以降、中古ショップやオークションを頻繁にあたったのだが、そもそも日本国内の絶対数が少ない部類のアルバムなので手に入らなかった。
「at his best」など彼の拠点であるオーストラリアからの直輸入盤には One step over the borderline、Bi-Coastal 等の主流曲は収録されているものの本アルバムのトータル性は当然失われていたし、歌詞カードなども付属していないのが悲しくもあり不便だった。
プロデュース・バックはAirplay・TOTOという最高級のチームで、AORファンでもそうでなくともグレイドン・フォスター時代の最高潮期アルバムとして必ず所有しておきたい1枚だ。またいつか絶版になるのは明らかだからである。

前作の「I Could Have Been A Sailor」と並び彼の代表作。デビッド・フォスターのプロデュースだけあって、前作より若干ハードな音作りになっています。

何といってもトップの、Totoを彷彿とされるようなイントロから、サビでのコーラス隊の盛り上げ方のすごさ。このコーラスはリチャード・ペイジとスティーブ・ジョージの元ペイジズの二人。これを聞くだけでもこのアルバムを買う価値があります。

AORというとどうもオタク的な響きもあるんですが、アレンさんをはじめ、ぜひ聞いて欲しいアルバムはいくつもあります。そのほとんどは現在廃盤になっていたりし、必ずしも一般的な評価は高くないですが、はやりのJ-POPやラップなんかよりはるかに聞けるものが多いと思うんですけどね、、。
