2001年第1弾リリースとなる彼女のアルバムは2枚同時発売。昭和の流行歌謡を取り上げたものと、洋楽の名曲を取り上げたものに別れてはいるが、どちらもハイセンスな仕上がり。


内容 (「CDジャーナル・レビュー」より)

90年にデビューした女性アーティストの“歌唱の魅力を伝えるために”制作されたカヴァー・アルバム2枚が同時リリースされた。#1はザ・ピーナッツや荒木一郎、日野てる子、坂本九らの昭和歌謡カヴァー篇。彼女自身も、そして制作スタッフもリアルタイムで体験していない曲たちのなかから、きわめて洋楽的なメロディを持つ曲が選ばれているのが興味深い。現在の視点から昭和歌謡のひとつの断面がみごとに描き出されているのだ。#2の方は洋楽篇。センチメンタル・シティ・ロマンス・ファミリー(告井氏や中野氏の息子たちも参加した文字通りファミリー)にバックアップされたリラックスしたセッションは、彼女自身が直接影響を受けていると思われている曲が並ぶ。ジョニ・ミッチェルとスティーヴン・ビショップが選ばれているあたりがキモかも。どちらもどこかで耳にしたら「コレ誰が歌ってるの?」と確かめずにはいられない、充実の出来。とりあえず、彼女の歌の魅力に触れてもらいたい。 (鈴木祐) --- 2001年06月号

五島さんは、昔から好きな女性なのですが、声できちんと歌を歌える方です。
”声できちんと歌を歌える”というと、当然なことのように思われがちですが、実は楽器や音楽の力を借りずに声だけで聴衆をうならせることのできるということなのです。

つまり、歌の原点というべきでしょうか、本質というべきでしょうか？、そういう歌の核心のようなものをきちんと、語りかけてくれることのできる女性なのです。

はっきりいって、このような歌の歌える方は、あまりいないとおもいます。
とくに今の流行歌を歌っているような人たちの中では、なかなかみられないとおもいます。

たとえば、ギター一本で、聴衆をガツンとやっつけられる音楽家、もしくはアカペラでやっつけられる音楽家という類の、人って、なかなかいないでしょう？

いわば、ジャニス・ジョプリンのように、歌を歌える女性なんです。

声質は違うといえども、おそらく、声のもつ”魂”のようなものを、自然に引き出すような魔力というものをもっている人なんだとおもいます。
天性の素質というものですね。
努力でどうのこのというものでなく、五島さんそのものが音楽になっている気がしているようにならないということです。

音楽の本質をしっている歌を歌ってくれているような気がします。
だからこそ、いい音楽は、いつまでもなえることはないし、どんなリメイクにも耐えていける。

五島さんならではの音楽は、きっと、音楽たる音楽というべきものなんでしょうか？

いい音楽を聴きましょうね。
