　１９７６年，初夏。劇場に見に行きました。ちょびひげデビッド・ニーブンがスクリーンで
活躍していた懐かしい時代。
　ヨーロッパ人が植民地アジアを啓蒙しにやってきた。しかも，相手は，近代化に一時期突出
したけれども，従順に飼いならされた敗戦後の日本の外交官，三船敏郎とその息子。家庭教師
ですから，思い出しませんか，『王様と私』デボラ・カーにユル・ブリンナー。
　巻頭，ヨーロッパ＝アジア間，１２時間以上のフライトとトランジット，待ち時間，おそら
く，ほぼ24時間の長旅に疲れきる中年デイブが飛行機の中，自慢話で暇つぶしするシーンが大
好きです。ＢＧＭは，壮麗な泣きのオーケストラ‘My Little Friend',ｂｙロイ・バッド。も
ちろん，後にもレイ・コニフ・シンガーズのコーラスで聴くことができます。
　なにやら牧歌的な日常風景が，一転恐怖の誘拐事件に。とはいうものの，今のデジタルハリ
ウッド大破壊アクション＆サスペンスシーンと比べてはいけません。
　旧宗主国のおおらかさとユーモア，主人公の秘密が明らかになった上でのアジア側からの歩
み寄り。このあたりが本編のきもでしょう。かっこつけてるけれども，実態はちょっとはてな
だし，アジアが大人になってきたと気づいて，ため息をつく。そんなテーマ。ですから，ＢＧ
Ｍの壮大さは，どこか自虐的でもある。
　そうか，最後のコーラスの軽さは，バランスを取って，張り詰めたものの中から空気抜きを
したわけですなあ。
　こんなのがあったの？というような埋もれた一編なんですが，わたしゃ，いつまでも覚えて
いるぞ。

英国映画らしい、さわやかなアドベンチャー映画です。ストーリーは純真な日本人少年と英国人家庭教師との触れ合いを通して展開されるテロリストグループからの脱出です。公開された１９７５年当時は、新聞等でも大きく宣伝された映画ですが現在は入手困難になっています。撮影されたクアラルンプールの風景、７０年代の良い雰囲気、子役の少年の可愛らしさが映画全体に満ちており、見ていて心温まります。最近の映画のようにアクションやＣＧに凝る事のないカメラワークに映画作りの原点を見るような作品です。
