あのブライアンイーノがプロデュースし、ニューヨークのパンク＆ノーウェーヴシーンを捉えた編集盤として名高いのが本作です。

大物アートリンゼイがかつて率いていたDNAを筆頭にユニークなサウンドを聞かせるバンドの音源が揃っています。パンクといっても、それはイギリスのSex PistolsやCrashのようなオリジナルパンクのそれとは違います。サウンド的にはまさにオルタナティヴと現在では呼ばれそうな音です。Sonic YouthやジャーマンプログレバンドCanやFaust、あるいはイーノの「歌モノ時代」に通じるセンスが本作にはあります。パンクをアートの視点で捉えたといっても良い本作は、不気味に歪んで鳴り響くサックスとギター、呪術的なリズム隊、呪文のようにうめいたり叫びまくるヴォーカル、ひねくれた曲の展開等は前衛そのもの。特に9以降は異常としかいえない音世界を創造しています。本作は、分からない人にはクダラナイ支離滅裂作でしょう。ですが分かる人には非常に感性を刺激する危ない作品の宝庫です。Sonic YouthやCan、Velvet Underground等のファンには特にお勧めです。

　ブライアン･イーノの企画によって実現したオムニバス･アルバムで78年当時のニューヨーク界隈のパンク･バンド群の中でもずば抜けてノイジー且つアヴァンギャルドな4つのバンドの楽曲を4つずつ、計16曲収録したもの。それにしても･･･これを当時聞いた人がどれほどの衝撃を受けたかは想像に難くない。だって、今聴いたってこれほどのパワーと狂気と色香を漂わせているものもそうはないと思うので。このアルバムを評する際にしばしば「極北」という言葉が使われることがあるけれど、文字通りの極点を記録した音塊ばかりで構成されていると思う。とりわけ凄いのがDNAとコントーションズ。シャープなギターをバックに声も枯れよとばかりに叫びまくり & サックスをハチャメチャに吹きまくるジェイムズ･チャンスのヴォーカルが凄い。楽器の音よりも彼の声の方がデカイというのが笑える。そしてDNA。今のアート･リンゼイからは想像もつかないような怒鳴りまくるヴォーカルに、次々に繰り出される弦がぶち切れんばかりにヒステリックに掻きむしるノイズ･ギターの連続攻撃と、不安感を増徴するような不気味なキーボードが束になって襲ってくるこれらの4曲は正にこのアルバムのハイライト。ほか演劇の音楽化を狙っていたというアングラ･アート臭漂うマーズや自作詩の朗読を我流のパンク･サウンドに乗せて聞かせる、リディア･ランチ率いるティーンエイジ･ジーザス等、壮絶極まりない音源ばかりで構成された永遠の名作。パンク、ニューウェーヴ･ムーヴメントが生み出した最大の問題作。

いまだに（２００２年）あの坂本龍一本人が一番好きなロックのアルバムです。それにしてもいろんな意味で凄すぎるアルバムです。最初はイーノの歌時代っぽいノリなんですが、その後は何と表現したらよいのか。でも私は何度か聞いていくうちにハマりました。映画でいうとデビットリンチが好きな人はハマると思う。
