イェンス＆アンダース・ヨハンソン兄弟と新生マハヴィシュヌ・オーケストラでベーシストを務めたヨナス・エルボーグのトリオによる1991年の作品です。この3人が揃うとやたらハイテンションな楽曲を連想してしまいますが、このアルバムでは意外にもダークで陳腐な表現を借りれば「北欧の氷原」を想起させる暗黒の世界が目前に広がります。3人とも躍動感とは無縁の、渋すぎるプレイに徹していますが、そこはかと覗かせる狂気と暴力性はやはり彼らならではのもの。気分が沈んでいるときにうっかりと聴いてしまうと、さらにどん底に落とされるという、いやな雰囲気が全体に漂っています。

というと何だか評価を落としているようですが、北欧独特の陰鬱な変態性を楽しむには、格好のテキストになります。ちなみに「ヤンス」と表記されていますが、「イェンス」のほうが実際の発音に近いとか。

ご存知イングヴェイ・マルムスティーンバンド、ストラトヴァリウス等の活躍で知られるヤンス・ヨハンソン(key)の1stソロ作品。メンバーはヤンスの兄アンダース(Dr)、ヨナス・エルボーグ(B)。ジャンルは「キーボード主体のプログレッシブロックジャズ風味」とでも言えばニュアンスは伝わりやすいだろうか（汗）。徹底した構築美の上にスタジオ録音と思えない、各人の超絶技巧に裏付けられた狂気ばる演奏が重なる好盤。そう、好盤ではあるのだが昨今のいわゆるプログレとは大きく一線を画す内容のため、些かマニア向けであることは否めない。よって星４つ。
因みに、この作品を皮切りに96年発表「HEAVY MACHINERY」、98年発表「fission」と続くヤンスワールド。この作品を上記２枚の作品と聞き比べるのもいいかもしれない。
