「蓮を食べる人」の意味のバンド名はギリシャ神話から･･･　そんなロータス･イーターズの1st(84年作)は、とにかく青い。邦題は「青春のアルバム」だが、このタイトルのつけ方は、まさに妙である。

これぞ若さゆえの甘酸っぱさであり、衝動であることは、もう音を聴いているだけで分かる。アズテックやオレンジジュースにはない独特の刹那感が、美しすぎるメロディと繊細なボーカルから溢れ出ては僕たちの胸をかきむしる。そうこれは、現実的な社会の厳しさやいやらしさとは違う、もっと想像の中だけで、美しく脆さを伴った触れることすらためらわれるような青春の歌なのだ。
彼らは、これ一枚で解散し、17年後に2ndを出したときにもはっきりしたけど、この1stに見られる儚く美しいポップ感覚は、残念ながら2ndでは失われてしまっていた。
唯一、僕が近い感覚を持てるのは、ブルーボーイの1stアルバムくらいかな。青さがどうしようもない煌めきを発揮するのは、そう容易いことではない。それだけに、このアルバムは貴重だし、多くの人に聴いてもらいたいと思う。

邦題「青春のアルバム」が言い得て妙。
"The First Picture Of You"を頂点として青春の憂い、哀しみ、希望を切ないメロディーに乗せて歌う。
美しすぎるアルバム。
