レイキャヴィク出身ノイズ系の4人組、シガー・ロスは、母国アイスランドで人気ナンバーワンのバンドだが、そういうことなら、シガー・ロスについてとやかく言うより、地震が多く、猛吹雪の続く険しい岩山の島での集団的精神異常について、はるか多く語るべきだろう。シガー・ロスの音楽に反映されているのは、息を飲むように荘厳なアイスランドの廃棄物ともいえる、不安定な精霊の王者のおとぎ話等の爆発だが、それがこのヨーロッパ・デビュー・アルバムで結晶化したといえる。ラブラドフォードの忘れがたい音の風景とエンヤの軽快なケルト的ファルセットの中間で釣り合いを保っている「Agaetis Byrjun」（邦題「アゲイティス・ビリュン」）は実に素晴らしく仕上がりだ。また、リーダーのヨンシー・バーギッソンは、アイスランド語をシガー・ロスが勝手に変化させて、「ホープランド語」と名付けた言語を使い、天使のようなファルセットのカデンツァを歌い上げる。さらに、バーギッソンはバイオリンの弓を使ってギターを弾き、きらめく音の波を一挙に送り出す。最初の曲、「Svefn-G-Englar」（邦題「スヴェン・ギー・エングラー」）は、シガー・ロスにとって決定的作品といえるが、さらに他の作品もなかなか聴かせてくれる。「Flugufrelsarinn」（邦題「フルーガフェールサリン」）の荘厳で流麗なフル・オーケストラや、「Ny Batteri」（邦題「ヌイ・バッテリー」）の神々しく宗教がかった呪文も聞いてみてほしい。（Amazon.co.uk）

Agaetis Byrjun is a truly breathtaking listen. Frontman Jon Por Birgisson sings in a language that Sigur R dub "Hopelandic"--an otherworldly mutation of Icelandic, sung in the falsetto cadence of angels; similarly, he plays his guitar with a violin bow, opening the floodgates for brilliant waves of feedback. And while it's the opening "Svefn-G-Englar" that's Sigur R' moment to date, there's far more that they have to offer; listen to the pomp and flourish of a full orchestra on "Flugufrelsarinn," or the awe-inspiring near-religious mantra of "Ny Batteri."
