この作品は、ギアナの国連大使であったブレイスウエイトの自伝小説をもとにし、『大脱走』ジェームズ・クラベルが製作・脚色・監督をしている。主演は名優、シドニー・ポアチエ。イギリスの労働者階級の学園に赴任した黒人教師と生徒の交流を描いた名作。
現在においても尚、階級社会の残滓を残しているイギリスだが、差別自体はこの作品のメインとはなっていない。むしろ、人生の理（ことわり）を主人公のマーク・サッカレイが生徒達に説いていくと言うストーリーになっている。1967年製作で、もはや古典とも言える作品だが、昨今の学園物の原点の一つと言えるし、その点に於いては決して色褪せていないだろう。85点。

1967年の作品、もはや学園ものの古典と言える作品

黒人教師サッカレイは大学を卒業したものの本来なりたかった技師の職をなかなか見つけることができず、白人が主の高校に教師として着任する。その高校は自由教育を謳っているが、実態は生徒への制御が効かない状態で荒れ果てていた。その中でもサッカレイが担当することになった卒業間近の3年生のあるクラスは、前の先生が手を拱いて逃げ出してしまったほどの悪童揃いで、周りの先生もほどほどでいいんですよ、あまり頑張らないでとアドバイスする。

　しかし、サッカレイは人格者であり、決して上から目線で生徒に物を言うことはなく、静かに冷静に語りかける。生徒の話にはきちんと耳を傾けるが、一方で自分の話もきちんと聞くように要求する。単なる物分りの良い先生ではなく、きちんとした判断基準に基づいて生徒に接していく。そして毎回、それは正しいか？、受け入れられるか？と生徒に真正面に問いかける。時には、正しくてもこちらがいったん引かなければならないことがあることが社会のリアリティであるということも教える。それが本物であるがゆえ、生徒は次第にサッカレイに心を開いていく。

サッカレイの毅然とした公平な態度は学園の世界だけではなく、実社会でも十分に有益な示唆を与えてくれる。サッカレイは自省できる人間であり、素晴らしい。
