思わず涙する様な、琴線に触れる映画ってあまりありません。演技のクサさや監督のあざとい意図が見え透いて白けてしまう映画が多い中、この作品は「映画のマジック」を堪能させてくれる傑作です。私ストレートなんでゲイの気持ちは解りませんが、主人公の人間愛や哀れが胸に迫ります。サントラ盤買っちゃいましたが美しい音楽がまた泣かせます。ウィリアム・ハートはたくさんの作品に出てますが、やはり本作の演技が一番。「マジックボーイ」で異色な演技を見せるラウル・ジュリアも役どころにハマっています。ラストシーン、朦朧として意識が観る幻覚は、なんとも美しく切ない。私が最も好きなラストシーンのひとつです。

本作の背景は架空の統制国家ですが、人の自由への渇望が牢獄という閉塞状況の中で切なく描かれます。蜘蛛女の物語を語り聞かすゲイの主人公、粗末な食事を口に運びながら、鉄格子の窓を見上げる何気ないシーンですら、胸にジーンと来てしまいます。もとは舞台脚本ですが、小説や脚本の映画化は大抵詰まらなくなるもの、しかしこの映画化は成功した希有な一例でしょう。

南米のある国の刑務所が舞台で、未成年をかどわかした罪で牢にいるゲイの男と新たに入ってきた政治犯の関係を描いたもの。悲しいストーリーだが、とてもうつくしく、幻想的に撮れている。ウィリアム・ハートの代表作。何年か前に亡くなったラウル・ジュリアも良い演技をしている。
