マウス・オブ・マッドネスはカーペンター流の作家Ｈ・Ｐ・ラブクラフトへのオマージュである。カーペンターだけあって、短い尺のなかに「もうひとつの世界」をうまく描ききっている。カーペンターにはゼイ・リブ、パラダイム、など、忍び寄る違う次元の世界からの侵略者との戦いを描いた作品も多いが、本作はその集大成的な作品だ。原題のIn the mouth of madnessはインスマス・オブ・マッドネス（インスマスの狂気）をもじって付けられたのだろう。インスマスとはラブクラフトの小説に頻繁に登場する地名である。

この映画には本当に驚かされました。直接的な猟奇的表現はないものの、ストーリーの唐突さ、ラストのサム・ニールの顔、エンディング・クレジットが流れる中、私もひざを抱えて、画面を凝視していました。こちらまで気が狂いそうです。ホラーは数多く見てきましたが、最近の作品でここまでのめりこませてくれたのは久しぶりでした。必見！

以前見たときには、町から出られない恐怖などにぞっとした、いやわくわくしたものですが、最近見直したら今ひとつ薄味で、いよいよ感性が鈍ってきたか（笑）と自戒の念しきり。地図にない町に入ってからの描写、自転車乗りやホテルの絵画など秀逸だと思いますが、こういったものをもっと登場させて町を狂気の様に描いてほしかった。というのも、この作品は異形の存在の直接的な脅威よりは、現実と虚構の垣根が崩れていく様を、サム・ニールという俳優を使ってあぶり出していくことに力を注いだような気がするからです。そういう意味では、ディックをも思い出させた作品でした。それにしても制作側はクリーチャーには心血注いだらしいが、物体Ｘみたいなチュルチュル、バキバキした怪物は、お約束といえどもこの映画には似合わなかった、と思えてならないんですけど。辛口ですみません。音声はdtsも装備。
