5.0 out of 5 stars 本作は永遠のウラ定番なのか, 2002/6/25
本盤なくして『ペットサウンズ』はあり得ない。
だから、『ペットサウンズ』を聴いてハマったかたには、ぜひ聴いて頂きたい一枚です。
例えば、『When I Grow Up』（邦題『パンチでいこう』←なんつーセンス……）。「もしボクが大人になったら」なんて、もう成人している大人が作る歌じゃないって。でも、『Caroline No』『God Only Knows』などのブライアンのイノセントを知っていれば納得もいくわけです。
『Please Let Me Wonder』で始まるＢ面は素晴らしいの一言。ベスト盤では収録されない曲も多く、やはり本盤の曲順でしか味わえない魅力もあります。
『Kiss Me, Baby』は、個人的に、ビーチボーイズ史上最高に美しいハーモニーだと思います。

何かと推論や分析されがちな作品。転換期、試行錯誤、次作や次々作の布石…。そうだとしても、それらは後から逆算した評価だ。もっと曲を楽しみたい。
まず抜群にパワフルな「ダンス・ダンス・ダンス」。考え抜いた音作りを意識させず、ポップスの楽しさを詰め込んだ傑作。「ヘルプ・ミー・ロンダ」の初演も良い。「お座敷小唄」を彷彿とさせる独特なフレーズが印象的だ。
「グッド・トゥ・マイ・ベイビー」も快作。初代ウルトラマンの歌を思わせるギターのリフがカッコいい。本作は全体に考え過ぎてない所が良い。演奏もコーラスも凝ってはいるが、適度に切り上げた潔さがある。
「プリーズ・レット・ミー・ワンダー」は音質が今一つだが見逃せない１曲。山下達郎氏によるほぼ原曲通りの秀逸なカバーもあり、曲の良さは証明済みだ。
本作はあまり先入観なく、気軽に楽しんでほしい。もう過小評価も過大評価も必要ない。

『トゥデイ』、そんなに良いだろうか？ま、『シャットダウン』よりは面白いって感じかね。ブライアンにとって、このアルバムは、モノラルレコーディングを初めて強行できた盤であるわけです。よって、ブライアンの興味はあくまでプロダクション。しかも不慣れで、何度もオーバーダブを繰り返し、闇雲に音質劣化させ、Ｂ面なんてモコモコして、聞いていられないったりゃありゃしない。私だったら、この後の『サマーディズ』を第一に推すけどなぁ、これは迷わず五つ星！何故か人気のある「シー・ノウズ・ミー」なんて、断片と言っていいでしょう。私がこの盤で最も良いと思うのが、「キス・ミー・ベイビー」と「アイム・ソー・ヤング」。曲もプロダクションも完璧！『サマー・ディズ』が垣間見える。
