　前作からジョージ・コールマンがサム・リヴァースに入れ替わっただけだが、緊張感はこちらの方が上である。ジョージ・コールマンの退団後、マイルスは既にショーターに白羽の矢を立ていたが、スケジュールの都合上、サム・リヴァースが参加したとされている。サム・リヴァースはトニー・ウィリアムスの師匠だし、その関係で参加したと言われている。
　このアルバムのサム・リヴァースのプレイは良い。フリーキーなトーンを駆使したかと思うと、バラードでは歌い上げる。きちんとコード進行の上でプレーできるし、フリーもできる。この当時のメンバーと同様に柔軟性を持ち合わせているのだ。それに独特のサックスのトーンも良い。また、マイルスのプレイも音もよく出ているし、この当時のオハコのナンバーを演奏しているだけあって、演奏自体も安定している。
　この後の『マイルス･イン・ベルリン』でショーターが参加し、一段とフリーでテンションの高い演奏になるわけだが、私にはこの『マイルス・イン・トーキョー』のテンションが丁度良い。『マイルス･イン・ベルリン』だと緊張感が高く、聴くのも心構えが必要な感じになってしまう。私がこの時代の一連のライブアルバムでよく聴くのは、これと『マイ・ファニー・ヴァレンタイン』の二枚。あまり語られることないアルバムだが、個人的にはお気に入りの一枚だ。
　なお、これでサム・リヴァースを気に入った人には、彼の初リーダーアルバム『フューシャ・スイング・ソング』を聴くことを強くお薦めする。

僕がジャズを聴き始めたのは高校1年の冬だった。当時話題になっていたBS&Tやシカゴといったニューロックの台頭に触発されいっそのことジャズの世界に踏み込んでみようと恐る恐る買ったのがこのレコード。ジャケットのかっこよさと東京でのライブということで、内容も確かめずなんとなく決めた。マイルス・デイビスという名前もよく知らなかったがその響きからも凄そうなイメージが伝わってきた。ウォーキンとソーファットのカプリングによるコンパクトLPだったが、曲全体がかもし出すスピード感とマイルスの火をはくような激しいアドリブに圧倒された。サム・リバースの過激でフリーキーなトーンやハンコックの自在で美的なピアノ、ロン・カーターの力強く正確なベースなどそれぞれに感銘を受けたが、それ以上に驚いたのが弱冠19歳というドラマー、トニー・ウイリアムスの神業とも思えるようなすばやく激しいドラミングであった。これがジャズだという感動と、いきなり凄いものに出会ってしまったという空恐ろしさである。結局それから30年以上、ジャズとの付き合いが続いているのだが、やはり最初に素晴らしいものと出会う事こそ大切だと思う。同様なライブステージのアルバムの出来からいうと、「フォア＆モア」や「マイルス・イン・ヨーロッパ」よりも劣るかもしれないが、個人的な思い出を加算して５星としたい。

超超有名曲ばかりですが、リヴァース加入もあってどれも新鮮です。
“帝王”とリヴァースの共演は(私の調べた限り)本作のみ。
よって内容もさることながら、史的にも貴重な音源です。
それにしてもMy Funny~は美しい･･･
