活動停止を表明したCoccoの4枚目にして,事実上のラスト・アルバム。4年間という活動のすべてがここに詰まっている。タイトルの{サングローズ}は沖縄でサンゴ細工のバラという意味。

2月21日の朝日新聞の全面広告によって告げられた衝撃の“活動中止”宣言。高い音楽的評価を獲得、セールス的にも好調なアーティストが突然すべての音楽活動をやめてしまう――まさに前代未聞の事件といってよいだろう。しかし僕は、初めてこのニュースに接したとき、どこかで「やっぱり……」と思っている自分を発見してしまった。そして、実質上のラスト・アルバムとなる今作を聴いて、その思いは確信へと変わった。
イノセントなアコースティック・サウンドがゆったりと立ち上がるフォーキー・チューン「珊瑚と花と」からはじまる今作には、複雑化の一途をたどる未曾有のヴァーチャル情報化社会・日本のなかで呆然と立ち尽くすCoccoの姿が生々しく刻み込まれている。その繊細な感受性によって数々の名曲をものにしてきた彼女はしかし、皮肉にも自らの感受性によって“活動中止”に追い込まれたのだと思う。あまりの凄まじさに、「早く復帰して!」なんてことも言えなくなってしまう、傑作。 (森朋之) --- 2001年05月号

歌は勿論のこと、この人は掛詞もうまいなぁ、と
実感したアルバム。
ジャケットは血で書かれたバラで、
このアルバムの名前は「サングローズ」。
ここのレビューでは「珊瑚細工のバラ」と
訳されていたが、実はもう一つの訳がある。
ラテン語にサングウィネという言葉があるのをご存知だろうか。
意味は「血」。スペルはSanguineだ。
そして、サングウィネのサングの部分とバラを
意味するローズ。合わせると、「血のバラ」
まさしくジャケットに書かれているものと一致するのである。
沖縄の方言とジャケット、そして今回の隠語。
歌も勿論だが、こういう部分でもCOCCOの非凡さを見て取れる。
彼女はいい歌手だった。

時間が経っても決して消えない、身を切るような悲しみがある。しかし同時に、この最後となる作品には、限りない優しさがある。癒される、救われるという安易な言葉をはねのけて、こっこはリスナーに確かに寄り添ってくれる。ただそこに寄り添ってくれることのありがたさに、泣かずにはいられなかった。

　このCDが発売されたのは２００１年。しかし何故か今になって購入し
はまっている。Coccoが復活したのをきっかけに聴いたアルバムだが、
古臭さを感じさせない。むしろ、脈々と聴かれ続ける作品では？
　それは、なぜだろうか？
　１曲目「珊瑚と花と」で人間の誕生を歌い、その後、人生の終焉を「
風化風葬」で、そして人との別離を強く優しくラスト「コーラルリーフ」
で見事に歌いあげているいるからだろう。
　人が生まれ、自然に返る、その様が美しく機械から流れてくる。
　穏やかに自分の生を受け止めたくなるアルバムだった。
