カート・コヴァーンはR.E.M.について「デビュー以来あんなに素晴らしい
メロディを作り続けられるなんてまるで神のようだ」と言ったそうですが、
歌詞はもっと神がかっているのではないかと思えるのが今作。

曲が全体的にまったりとしていて、後ろ向きの癒し的なメッセージがさらに
ゆるやかに受け止められるようになっているが、中でも白眉は
「イミテイション・オブ・ライフ」の素晴らしさに尽きる。よくもまあこの
ように素晴らしい曲が書けるなあと感嘆せざるを得ない。「君が泣いている
なんて誰にも分かるわけないんだ」と聴き手を突き放す言葉を吐いているはず
が、聴いているうちに「君はこれだけ素晴らしいことがやれているんだよ」と
最高の励ましの歌へ変化する、比喩と隠喩の至高の技術がこめられている。
マイケル・スタイプが書く歌詞には一言もそんな前向きな言葉は載っていない
のに、聴き手に届く気持ちはとても優しく暖かい。それでいてラジオで全部
かけられるように３分台で収められていたりする。おみそれしました。

売上がどうだというレベルはすでに超越している。こういう曲が作れる間は
まだまだ世界最重要のバンドという地位は揺るがない。

個人的な意見だけど・・・ビル・ベリーが居た頃のＲ．Ｅ．Ｍ．の方が好きだった・・・・　　　んがっ！！！　　べラボーに泣けてくる！！！　　ワイも夜中にSaturn Return、イヤホン＆大音量（ＭＡＸ）で聞いてるが、本当に不思議な程、泣ける。。。　　losing~の次に好きなimitation of~の世界観、歌詞の内容も割とイイ感じ♪　　マイケル坊主様の歌声にも聞き惚れやすいしね。　こんな新生Ｒ．Ｅ．Ｍ．　　いいかも♪

実験的な意味合いが強かった前作"UP"も個人的には好きだったが、方向性がすっきりした本作もなかなかグーです。 アルバム全体的には、随所にR.E.M.らしいフレージングが散りばめられているが、それがマンネリ化するどころかむしろ新鮮に聞こえるのが彼らの魅力かな？心の傷を癒す真の<癒し系>とは、まさにR.E.M.ではないかと確信する一作です。
