   20世紀初頭のフィンランド。9歳の少女カトリは、3年前にドイツに出稼ぎに行った母の帰りを待っていたが、戦争のため音信は途絶えていた。苦しい家計を助けようと、カトリは働きに出る…。アウニ・ヌオリワーラによる原作をアニメ化した、1984年放送作品。この作品で、日本アニメーション制作の「世界名作劇場」は10本目を数えることとなった。
   ライッコラ屋敷で家畜番として働くことになったカトリは、ときに窮地に立ちながらもさまざまなことを学び、家の主人たちから信頼を得るようになる。1年後、クウセラ屋敷へ移ったカトリは、そこでもかけがえのない出会いをするのだった…。
   あちこち移った末に母親と再会するラストは『母をたずねて三千里』を連想させるし、幼くして働きながらも別のこと（カトリの場合、読書）に関心を持つのは『フランダースの犬』のネロに通じる。それらの主人公たちと違うのは、カトリが決して自分の境遇を悲観しないこと。むしろ「いろいろなことを学べる」と楽しんですらいるように見える。「世界名作劇場」が始まって10年、求められる主人公像も変わってきたのだろう。
   全編を通じて主人公を苦しめたりする存在がいるわけではないが、物語はほどよい起伏に満ちている。牧場での生活の情景も心をなごませてくれる。「名作」シリーズらしい、心おだやかに見られる良作である。（安川正吾）
