原作は「週刊少年マガジン」誌に好評連載されていた漫画。
漫画原作を見本としつつも、アニメらしい造りの定石を踏んでいるので、見ていて安心、違和感がない。

言うなれば、熱血ロボットアニメを、麻雀でやっている感じの話作り。
故に、麻雀のルールなどを完全に理解していない初心者でも、単純に楽しめる。
「ロン」とか「満貫」とか「天和」などという麻雀用語が、そのまま「超電磁ヨーヨー」、「ビームサーベル」、「波動砲」という感じで、その場その場の闘いを閉める必殺技となる。

話の舞台は終戦直後の日本だが、その辺りの描写には、チト不満あり。デジタル着色の影響もあり、妙にこざっぱりとしていて、終戦直後の雑然としたいかがわしい雰囲気が感じられない。
とはいえ、先にも述べたように、構造が「熱血ロボット系麻雀アニメ」なので、ディテールに目を瞑ってしまっても問題はない。

画は、当然の様にデジタル着色。よどみが無く非常に綺麗。
但し、綺麗過ぎる故か、画に力強さが感じられない。この辺りは、セル着色の旧来アニメと、一長一短。
予算が少ないためか、動きも必要最小限に押さえられている印象。日本のお家芸、リミテッド・アニメーションの技巧を堪能できる所も、熱血ロボット系の面目躍如。

音はかなり淋しい。ステレオ収録だが、予算などの制約からか、音数自体が最小限に抑えられている。
ただ、主役級の声優が凄い。ベテラン、実力派の競演。
何気ない演技・台詞の一つ一つから感じられる重み、意図が作品の格を押し上げている。

戦後、間もない時期の日本で麻雀の腕を奮う少年の話。

麻雀といってもまともなものではなく、
イカサマ前提の「玄人（バイニン）」ばかりが登場する。
その腕で調子に乗っている相手たちの技をいかに主人公が見抜き、
それを上回るイカサマで勝っていけるかが見もの。

個人的に麻雀のルールはあまり知らず、
牌の呼び名や役などはわからないのだが
相手側の凄さや主人公の心理などは十分にわかるので
あとは牌がどう運ばれているのかをある程度推測すれば
ストーリーとしては楽しめる。
特に後半になればなるほど麻雀そのものよりも
人間ドラマの色が濃くなってくるので、なかなか面白い。

敵側には顔つきも含めて嫌な奴ばかりが登場するので
主人公がそれを次々とヘコませる姿が気持ちいい。
麻雀を知っている人ならなおさら楽しめるだろう。

けして駄作ではないですがちょっとなにかが足りない感じがあります。勝負師の勝ちにこだわるストーリーが面白い作品ですので是非観てください。
