   伝説のロックバンドはっぴいえんどに在籍していた大滝。その後1970年代を通して数多くのソロアルバムを発表するも、音楽的な実りの豊かさとは裏腹に商業的な成功を手にすることはできなかった。
   そんな不遇の時代を経た彼が、そのマニアックともいえるアメリカン・ポップスへの深い知識をわかりやすく結晶化させた作品が『A LONG VACATION』である。
   それまでの日本にはなかったドライでクールな情感を漂わせるメロディ、精密に構築されたカラフルな音作り、松本隆の手によるファッショナブルな歌詞が生みだすサウンドイメージは、当時の音楽シーンに大きな衝撃を与えるとともに、ベストセラーとなった。「ジャパニーズ・ポップスの最高峰」と評されることも多い傑作。永井博によるジャケットも秀逸だ。
   本作『20th Anniversary Edition』は、この名作を大滝自らがリマスタリングし、さらに未CD化だったレアなカラオケ盤『SING A LONG VACATION』の音源をボーナスとして収録した作品。1981年の発表以来アナログ盤、カセットテープ、CDとさまざまなフォーマットで販売されてきた『A LONG VACATION』だが、この『20th Anniversary Edition』では今までで最もロック的な、硬質でクリアな音を楽しむことができる。（森 朋之）

早いもので、この作品が発表されてから２０年になる。
しかし、松本隆の素敵な詩と大滝詠一のコラボレーション
は今も全く色あせてはいない。
そんな名曲ばかりが収められているこの作品が、なんと
大滝詠一自身によってリマスターされ、再発売されたので
さっそく購入し聴いてみたが、うれしくなるくらいの
音質の良さだ。音圧もすごく高い。

しかもインストナンバー９曲が追加された超お徳用ＣＤ
に仕上がっているから驚きだ。
いままでの作品を聴きなじんでいた方ならば、ぜひとも
この「２０世紀記念盤」をもう一度耳にしてほしい。
あのせつない夏の思い出が再び甦って来るだろう。
ちなみに９曲目の「散歩しない？」と歌っている女性の
声は太田裕美さんです。

J-POPの定義を真剣に検証すればそれはそれで時間がかかるのだろうが、「Ｊ（日本的な概念）」と「ＰＯＰ（欧米的な概念）」を折衷して産み出された本邦固有（？）のカルチャーなのではないかと思う。

そうした意味で、鉄壁のPOPSフリークである大滝氏による本作は、ありとあらゆる舶来ポップスの意匠が、伝統的な歌謡曲の枠組みの中に納まっていて、見事なまでに日本人から見た異文化であるポップスを咀嚼している。そして何にもまして肝心なのは「ダサく」ない。

全編、はつぴいえんど時代からの仲間である松本隆が作詞を行い、作品全体に「言葉」の面でも統一感をもたらしている。

大滝詠一の長きにわたる音楽活動において、本作は最大のピークであり、まさに「一家に一枚」的なアルバム。

「君は天然色」を皮切りに繰り広げられる大滝詠一ワールドは、このアルバムでJ-POPの一つの頂点を築いたと思う。

どの曲も、ものすごく良質なポップスになっているけど、個人的に一番思い入れがあるのは、恋するカレン。何度も繰り返した失恋の度にこの曲を聞いては涙にくれたものでした。。。次の曲FUN×4が、素敵な彼女を手に入れちゃう、っていう曲だってのも、このアルバムの構成のすごいところだと思う。

このCDを聴くと必ず、真夜中のドライブだとかサークルの合宿みたいな風景をひとつふたつ思い出してしまう。
