アメリカのベテランメタルバンド、サヴァタージのアルバム。2001作
スーダンの内戦を取材し絶望する少女を写した1枚の写真家から、ピューリッツァー賞を
受賞した報道カメラマンの、その精神的な苦悩をテーマにしたストーリーアルバム。
重厚かつドラマティックなサウンドスタイルはもはやこのバンドの代名詞で、
もの悲しいピアノの音色や叙情的なギターフレーズが、シリアスな物語性を強調している。
ザッカリー・スティーブンスが脱退し、今作ではジョン・オリヴァがヴォーカルをとっているが、
違和感はまったくない。サウンド的に迫力も増していて、メタリックな力強さでは前作「The Wake of Magellan」以上だ。

ザッカリー・スティーブンスが脱退したため、ジョン・オリバがボーカルに復帰しています。個人的にはその点はまったく気になりません。むしろ初期の頃を思い出して、逆に新鮮な感じもします。(ザッカリーの気合と情熱のボーカルも大好きでした。）いずれにせよ、このバンドはボーカルで勝負するタイプではないと思うので、それほどのマイナスはないと思います。

内容は、ファンの私には素晴らしい！の一言でした。ジョンのピアノや、クリスの聴けばそれと分かるリフとソロが満載のアルバムです。3曲目がシングルとなったようですが、荘厳な始まりから中盤以降の盛り上がりは、このバンドならではといったところです。

実のところ、私はサヴァタージの熱狂的なファンではありません。しかし、この彼ら独自の世界にはたいへん惹かれるところがあります。アメリカのバンドでありながら、ヨーロッパの匂いが漂っています。難はボーカルの粗い声質かと思いますが、その点を好きになれば、もしくは気にしなければ、このジャンルでは最高水準の楽曲を提供し続けているバンドであると思います。
