みゆきさんファンなら誰でも知っている「ご乱心時代」の大傑作。
「予感」でフォーク/ニューミュージックの頂点を極めたみゆきさんは、次作「はじめまして」からRockサウンドを追求し始める。この時代迄のみゆきさんは本当に野心的だ。
「はじめまして」は未消化。「御色なおし」は唄いなおし盤だから対象外として、前作の「miss.M」と本作がご乱心時代の金字塔。
全体的な統一感が非常に秀逸。ハードなRockサウンド(いかにも80年代的な打ち込みサウンドだが)の洪水の中、ポツンと置かれた一輪挿しの花の様な「シーサイド・コーポラス」。絶妙のコントラストだ。みゆきんさの全作品の中でも、最もトータル・アルバムとしてのクォリティが高い。正にみゆきさんの「サージェント・ペッパー」とも云えるアルバムだ。
「HALF」や「白鳥の歌が聴こえる」など佳曲も多いが、アルバム通しての色彩感をこそ、聴いて欲しい。

かつては毎日聞いてた中島みゆき。それが何時の間にやらほとんど聞かなくなってしまって。でも最近又ちょっと。
マニアックに好きな方ならこういう区分が分かると思いますが、このへん「中期」くらいが一番好きでした。壮大な人間愛、みたいなことが歌われている大作よりも、あくまで個人的な片隅の哀切の表現でしかないような、佳品とでもいうべき作品（傑作「波の上」を頂点とするような）が。

中島みゆきを好きになったきっかけは、時のトレンディードラマの主題歌にもなった「浅い眠り」で、初めて買ったアルバムは「ＥＡＳＴ　ＡＳＩＡ」でした。世代が現れているでしょうか。

ミュージシャンとして成功しながら、なおかつなぜこんなにも切実に孤独な歌が歌えたのか。当時は思いませんでしたが、今は不思議に思えます。

このアルバムには、力強い応援歌は入っていない。ここに入っている曲
は、歌詞にとても色気を感じさせるものばかりだ。
色気といっても、いやらしさではない。
わざと突き放す姿から切々と伝わってくるような、行間に漂う色気とで
も言おうか。
「HALF」のように、プラトニックを連想させる曲が、みゆきさんの曲に

は多い。それでいて、このあふれる色っぽい魅力は何なのだろう。

新作「恋文」に連なる曲もそうだが、この人が歌う愛の歌は、清潔で、
可愛らしいほど女らしい。
