帝王マイルスを偲んだ『ザ・キング・イズ・ゴーン』、エリントンら巨星の遺産を蘇らせた『テイルズ』に比べ、“マーカスその人”が格段にせり出てきた。こう突いたら、「だからM↑2=マーカスの二乗なんだよ」と言う。つまり、器からこぼれ落ちるほど“個”を盛り込んだのだそう。これには、新スタジオの完成と自前のレーベル設立、それに伴うマネジメントの変更が深く関わり合った。一層の自由と、開かれた未来を得たのだ。そこで、“今まで以上に僕の持ち場を増やすこと”を前提にプロジェクトを始動した。なるほど、超大物たちの声を濃縮させても酔狂に陥らず、それでいてファンク&ポップの法則を貫けたのは、創作のパースペクティヴを広げたから。ジャヴァンとのブラジル路線の(8)に、それが象徴的に表われている。ドラムンベースによるクロージングも新境地と呼ぶにふさわしい。さらにそれらを、ミンガスやコルトレーンの佳曲と共振させた。完成度と可能性とがこう見事に通い合うと、信奉者でない僕も降参。 (成田正) --- 2001年04月号
