カシオペア、ジンサクで出来なかったことやってます。スラップしてます。グルーブしてます。
それでもって、いつも優しい音も出してます。
数少ないベーシストのソロアルバム！皆さん買って聴きましょう！！！

テクニカル系ギタリストとしては屈指の腕をもつグレッグ・ハウとジャズ・フュージョン界では当代の売れっ子ドラマー、デニス・チェンバースを招聘して作られたスーパー・セッションアルバムです。これだけのメンバーが揃えばさぞかし素晴らしい演奏が期待できるだろうと誰しもが思うメンツです。しかしながら、一通り、二通り聴いてみて「？」。もう一度聴いてみて「？」という感じが残念ながら否めません。確かに演奏自体はどれをとっても素晴らしく、文句のつけどころがないのですが、聴いていてワクワクするような興奮がいつまで経っても沸き上がってこないのです。これだけのメンバーだから、大いに期待するのが筋ですが、残念ながら期待値を下回った出来です。

何が足りないのかと自分なりに考えましたが、まず楽曲そのものがすべてに平板で、これといった曲が見当たらないという点。唯一のカバー曲である、ジャコパスの「PUNK JAZZ」を聴いて「おお！」と感じられたのは大変な皮肉です。さらには、グレッグ・ハウのギターが十分に生かされていないのもこのアルバムの最大の弱点です。ギターから入るか、櫻井さんのベースから入るかで評価も変わってくるはずですが、ギターから入る人にとっては物足りなさを露呈してしまいます。おそらく櫻井さんは２人に気を使うあまりに最大公約数的な仕上がりを目指したのではないかと推測しますが、そうした櫻井さんの気配り、最終的な押しの弱さが全体を中途半端なものにしてしまっていると感じます。のちに発表されたライヴDVDが秀逸な出来ばえだっただけに、この作品でももっと櫻井カラーをゴリ押ししてもよかったのでは？日本人特有の謙譲の美徳は、残念ながらアメリカ人には通用しなかったようです。

これを聞くと細胞が活性化する感じです。ナチュラルキラー活性ばんばんあがりそう。エンドルフィンばんばん出そうです。櫻井さんもカイロに通いながら、自分の肉体の限界と闘っているのだと思うと、頑張らなくてはと、思います。間に入ったスローなバラードにほっと一息。やさしい櫻井さん。
