第２次大戦末期ジェット機を開発した航空会社の社長とテスト・パイロット達が、ひたすら音速（：マッハ）突破に挑む男の情熱と執念を描く、１９５２年製作・「デヴィッド・リーン監督」の傑作航空映画。
ただひたすら音の壁に挑む冷血漢の主演「ラルフ・リチャードソン」のおさえた演技により、音速突破に挑む秘めたる情熱・意志の強さの、感動が伝わってきます。
また、この映画のクライマックスの音速突破のシーンは、フィクションながらあたかもその場にいるかのように細やかに描き出し、その瞬間の興奮が伝わってきます。
冒頭のスピットファイアからアンソン・スウィフト・アタッカー・バンパイアなど登場機も多彩！
美しい空中撮影と夢に挑戦する勇気を持った男たちの心意気が画面から伝わってきます。
（余談：世界で始めて「音の壁」を破ったのは「ライトスタッフ」（：ＤＶＤ）の主人公・「チャック・イエーガー」です。）

「アラビアのロレンス」の砂漠を思い浮かべて下さい。
「ドクトルジバコ」の雪原を思い出して下さい。
「ライアンの娘」の荒海を覚えていますか？

あの感性で「空」を映像化したら、

考えただけで、ゾクゾクしませんか？

空軍協力の下に、一流監督が作るという希有なヒコーキ映画です。テストパイロットを軸にしつつ親子の絆などストーリーも一本通っていて、ヒコーキアクション映画に終わっていないのがさすが。アタッカーやスイフトが乱舞する実機シーンは超貴重で、他にもタイガーモスからピカピカのコメットまで、50年代の英機が続々出演しています。祝DVD化!
