第５番は、ハイティンク／コンセルトヘボウの共演で、テーマ的には「抑圧の克服から勝利へ」というよりも「人生における人間性の確立」に重きを置いた演奏に感じます。ムラヴィンスキー／レニングラード・フィルの深く鋭く抉る様なアンサンブルとは対称的で、コンセルトヘボウらしい芳醇なハーモニーとなっています。
この第５番は、１９７３年５月２６日に東京文化会館で行われたムラヴィンスキー指揮／レニングラード・フィル（ＡＬＴＵＳ盤）の演奏と共に私のクラシック人生の宝物です。

第９番はハイティンク／ロンドン・フィルの共演で、こちらも愉悦的な名演奏です。

最初このディスクの交響曲第5番を聴いたときは、なんだかぼやっとしていて焦点の定まらない演奏だと思った。第一楽章の中間部ではスネアドラムが微妙にずれる。ホールトーンの残響が多く、終楽章の迫力もいまひとつだ。しかし、聴き込んでいくうちに、弦楽器のしなやかさと美しさに耳が行くようになった。特に第三楽章の孤独な響きは白眉である。いっぽう交響曲第9番の演奏はロンドン・フィル、打楽器も小気味良いし、巨大なシンバルやワイヤーの音を強調したスネアドラムの音が聴ける。弦楽器はアンサンブルが良く、金管の音は悲痛な表現に向いている。ハイティンクという指揮者は実直肌のイメージがあるが、ショスタコーヴィチの音楽にいちはやく着目し全集を完成させたその慧眼と冴えはたいしたものだ。このデッカ録音のショスタコーヴィチにはそうしたクールな一面が見事に浮き彫りになっている。いいディスクだ。

つくずく思ふ事だが、クラシック音楽のＣＤは、値段と内容が相関しない。--このＣＤが良い例である。何と素晴らしいＣＤだろうか。そして、それが、かくも安いのである。--オランダの指揮者ハイティングは、ショスタコーヴィチの熱心な演奏者として知られる指揮者であるが、このＣＤの収められた、彼の指揮によるショスタコーヴィチの交響曲第５番、第９番は、どちらも絶品である。そして、音質も素晴らしい。--第５番は、先ず、第１楽章が、ゆっくりとした導入部も、十分に劇的で速い中間部も、文句無しに名演であり、感動的である。又、第２楽章は、その一貫したテンポが絶妙で、素晴らしい。第３楽章も、虚飾が無く、その静かな始まりから緊張感有る中間部、そして、再び静かな終わりまで、実に感動的である。そして、第４楽章も、始まりから、コーダの直前まで、実に名演なのだが、残念な事に、一番大事なコーダの部分が、速い。これだけは、不満であったが、全体としては、その速すぎるコーダについての不満も忘れる程、この第５は素晴らしい。又、第９は、先ず、第１楽章が、他の指揮者の演奏に較べて速く、それが、この曲が、本来演奏されるべきテンポなのではないかと思はされた。（この第１楽章は、この曲は、こう言ふ曲だったのか、と思はされる様な名演である）第３楽章から第５楽章に至る後半部分の流れも小気味良く、特に、第５楽章中間部のクライマックスは、十分劇的である。第９に関して言へば、ハイティングがロンドン交響楽団を指揮したこの演奏は、私がこれまでに聴いたショスタコーヴィチの第９交響曲の演奏の中では、最も優れた演奏であった。ショスタコーヴィチを愛する全ての人に、そして、ショスタコーヴィチの素晴らしさをまだ知らない人に、この素晴らしいＣＤを推薦する。（西岡昌紀・内科医）
