１９７３年の録音ながら音の状態は非常にいい。
彼が生きていれば今頃７０歳代となっているはずで
この演奏を聴くだけでも、彼を失ったことは非常に大きな損失である事が
わかる。
テンポは適切ながら自信に溢れ、堂々としている。
これは曲自体が持っている性質と関わりがあるのだろうが
それにしても引き締まった類のない演奏といえよう。

ハイドン変奏曲の最後は指揮者なしで録音されたと言われるものだが
これを聴けばいかにウィーン・フィルが彼を愛していたか感じるであろう。

私事で恐縮だが、クラシックの指揮者を初めて聴くときにはブラームスの交響曲第1番を聞いて判断するようにしている。

第一楽章の入り方、オーケストラのバランス、全体のテンポ、自然な流れ、、、金管、木管などの歌わせ方など、、、チェック項目はいろいろである。
で、私のスタンダードな演奏はこのケルテス指揮ウィーン・フィルのこの一枚。なにもかもが私の理想とするブラームスそのものである。
他には第2番、第4番もいい。（第3番はあまりに第3楽章だけが一人歩きしている感じで、どうしても素直に楽しめない。）
