   もちろんグルダのピアノも、言葉も出ぬほどの素晴らしさである。凛とした筋肉のように、艶やかで、誇らしげで、美しいということを、まったく恥じる気配もない。王者の風格とはまさにこのようなものであろう。優しさも、力強さも、瞑想も、決断力も、勇気も、人間的でポジティヴな感情のすべてがここには詰まっている。長いたてがみをなびかせた獅子の気高い音楽――そんな言葉さえ思い浮かぶ。1971年1月の録音だが、いまだに「皇帝」最高の名演のひとつとして、輝かしい存在感を放っている。「テンペスト」は、グルダがウィーンの反逆児としてめきめきと頭角を現し始めた1957年12月、グルダ27歳の録音。グルダ特有のはちきれんばかりのリズムの生命力と勢いと才気が、馴染み深い「テンペスト」を鬼気迫る嵐のような音楽へと昇華させている。協奏曲の余白に収めるだけではもったいないくらいの名演である。（林田直樹）

グルダらしい弾むようなタッチ。バックハウスやギレリスとは全くタイプの違うベートーヴェンではあるものの、これはこれで十分に楽しい演奏です。ホルスト=シュタインのサポートも重々しいものではなく、爽やかなもので、皇帝らしくないと感じる人はいるかもしれませんが、他の皇帝と聞き比べても予算的に大丈夫でしょう。軽やかな皇帝を素直に楽しんでみてください。

ベートーヴェンの「皇帝」というと、ベートーヴェンがカデンツァを許さず、ピアニストにとっては自由度が低い作品と言われています。
よって「皇帝」の名に相応しいピアノ演奏が多いのですが、グルダはそんな曲でも瑞々しさを失わせず、また、かといってこの曲に必要な威厳は存分に保たれた素晴らしい演奏をしてくれます。

純粋なクラシック以外に、ジャズや様々な音楽が融合された自作曲をコンサートで披露し、またそうした作品集も数多く録音しているグルダ。私はグルダのコスモポリタン的な「非クラシック」作品を愛するひとりであったが、そうした演奏を聴けば聴くほど、彼はやはりウィーンに住むクラシック ピアニストなのだな、という思いを強めるばかりだった。この時期の彼のベートーヴェン (特にピアノ協奏曲第５番) に耳を傾けると、むしろここにこそ、グルダがポピュラー音楽というマテリアルで表現したかったことが息づいているのではないか、という印象を持つ。技巧的で繊細ながらも、生々しい生命感を感じさせる若々しい「ノリ」があるからだ。
