スーパー・トロンボーンは95年に結成されたグループ。本作はバンド名をタイトルにした95年のデビュー作、96年のセカンド作『ハロー・ヤング・ラヴァーズ』に続くサード作で、2000年に録音された。
このバンド、日ごろ地味な存在に甘んじているトロンボーンをあえて主役にした企画が秀逸。しかも4本のトロンボーンをフィーチャーすることによって、ソロとアンサンブルに厚みと変化を持たせているところがすばらしい。同時に聴く者を楽しませようというサービス精神もおう盛で、文句なしに楽しめる。
プロデュースとアレンジを担当するのは、マンハッタン・ジャズ・クインテットでおなじみのデヴィッド・マシューズ。見かたによっては、このバンドの真の主役はマシューズといっていいかもしれない。デイヴ・グルーシン＆リー・リトナーの演奏で知られる<1>、マシューズのラテン・アレンジが光るホレス・シルヴァーの名曲<3>など、どの曲も聴きどころがいっぱい。ボズ・スキャッグスのヒット曲<4>は、意表をついたアレンジでスウィンギーに演奏している。（市川正二）
