この名前が彼女たちのファンにどれだけインパクトがあったのか、およそ想像つかないが、僕にとっては間違いなく心臓鷲掴みものだったスティーヴ・アルビニ。彼のもとでレコーディングしたシングル「青白い月」に刻印されたザラザラとしたサウンドの手触りはとてもエロティックだったし、イマジネーティヴだった。新しいアーティストとして一番大切な、まとまることを拒絶するような力がそこから伝わってきただけに、まさに待望のデビュー・アルバムだ。出してきた3枚のシングルの評などをみると“林檎”の流れで語られることが多いようだが、もちろんそうした枠に収まらないところをたっぷりと聴かせてくれる。誰もが思い当たるような風景を歌った「ひぐらし」の叙情性が激音の響きのなかとても効果的だったり、素直な恋愛感情が淡々と綴られていく「君は笑う、そして静かに眠る。」などがハッとさせたりと、細かい変化が奇妙に耳に残っていき、今後の成長と変化がとても気になるグループだ。 (大鷹俊一) --- 2001年03月号
