ブルジョアの気取った紳士淑女が、会食をしようとすると色々な邪魔が入って食べることが出来ない。難しいことを考えずにこのシチュエーションだけでも見てるだけでなんだか面白い。登場人物が唐突に語り始める奇談が、オムニバス映画のように映画の途中に挿入してくるあたりも既成の概念に囚われないブニュエルらしい演出だ。「自由の幻想」と並んで、最初は見ても変な映画だと思うけど、何度か見直すうちにだんだん可笑しくなったり、恐ろしくなったりと、噛めば噛むほど味が出てくる映画だ。そういう意味では、ＤＶＤなどで買ってみるには最適なソフトかもしれない。

登場人物の金持たちが　要はなんとしても食事にありつけないという着想だけで作り上げた空前絶後のブラックコメディー。各場面が常に誰かの夢であるという設定は　その後日本で「時をかける少女」でコピーされかことも記憶にまだ新しいものがある。それにしても　こんな映画が製作できること自体素晴らしい。欧州映画の奥深さである。日本映画にも　こんな余裕が欲しいと思うのは　我儘なのだろうか？

この作品は１９７３年の米国アカデミー賞外国語映画賞を受賞しましたが、ノミネート後のインタビューでルイス・ブニュエル監督は持ち前のブラックユーモアで「受賞の自信は有る。彼らの要求する金は払ったから。」と冗談を飛ばしたことから、アカデミー賞委員会が否定に躍起となったという曰く因縁のある傑作です。
