劇場版さらば宇宙戦艦ヤマトに対してテレビ版であるヤマト２は土方氏など一部の設定が変更になっている。島とテレサのラブロマンス、古代とデスラーの友情の芽生え等があり続編である新たなる旅たちへのステップとなている。白色彗星帝国のテーマであるパイプアルガンの旋律が心地よい

この作品と「さらば宇宙戦艦ヤマト」と同列に取り扱われる事が多いのですが、全く別物と考えて頂いた方が良いです。さらば宇宙戦艦ヤマトは、ヤマトの最後としてふさわしい作品を作ろうというコンセプトに則って作られたものですが、この作品は今後のヤマトにどう継続するかという考えで作られたものです。従って、多くの人が指摘されている差異が出ているわけです。小生の記憶に拠れば、放送前にプロデューサーは各学年誌で「古代進は死なせない」と明言していましたし、放送開始時の新聞では「全26話」と2クール予定であることが明記されています。作る意図が全く違うので、同列に考えると期待とは違う感想を持たれることになるので、この作品は、TV版「さらば宇宙戦艦ヤマト」ではなく、「宇宙戦艦ヤマト２」であることをはっきり理解して購入されるのがお勧めです。

「さらば宇宙戦艦ヤマト　愛の戦士たち」をもとに設定を変更し、TV版として製作されたのが本作です。
ヤマト2（TV版）で主人公の古代やヒロインの雪、そして真田、佐渡先生など「さらば〜」で死んでしまったキャラクターを生存させたため、
これ以後の「新たなる旅立ち」「ヤマトよ永久に」「ヤマト3」「完結編」などの続編が作られていくことになります。
ヤマトのファンの中には「さらば〜」で終わらせておいた方がよかったという意見も多数あり評価は分かれるところですが、
私自身はヤマトの音楽を手がけた宮川泰氏のファンなので、すばらしい音楽を聴けるチャンスを与えてくれたという意味でこのTV版を評価しています。
シナリオとしては、序盤から中盤にかけてテレサのメッセージを求めてテレザートまでの航海が中心です。
その中で空間騎兵隊の斉藤との出会いやナスカ、ゴーランド、デスラー、ザバイバルとの戦いが描かれます。
さらに、この作品ではテレサは傍観者ではなく戦士として白色彗星に戦いを挑みます。
中盤から後半はバルゼー艦隊との激戦やデスラーとの対決、帝国都市との死闘が描かれ、「さらば〜」とは違った展開になります。
（「さらば〜」との違いに関する批評は視聴者により判断が異なるのでここでは言及できません）

敵であるデスラーやズォーダー大帝の話も詳細に描かれるので彼らのドラマも楽しめます。
特にズォーダー大帝は人間としても大物で、敵ながらあっぱれです。
ヤマト2に過剰に拒否反応を示さない人にはぜひ見てほしい一品です。
