インスタントシトロンというユニットの潔いところは、何といっても変わらない強さだと思う。往々にして音楽業界では、アルバムごとに変化をつけることを要求され、過剰なアレンジが時間と共に古臭かったりよけいに感じることが多い中、シトロンは全くそんなことをしない芯の強さがある。キュートでかわいいボーカルとポップの王道ともいえるメロディー、それだけで成り立っているシトロンは、渋谷系以降では実に珍しい、周りの流れに揺るぐことのないタイプのユニットなのだ。

そして、このアルバム「リトル・ギャング・オブ・ザ・ユニヴァース」はその傾向が最も強く現れたアルバムだと思う。他のアルバムには、1曲か2曲は、キラーチューンというか、ピッチ早めの聴いた瞬間に耳を奪われる曲が入っているが、ここでは全体を通して、美しく落ち着いたメロディーで溢れている。ここがハイライトみたい場面はない。その代わりに、ずっと優しくてホッとする雰囲気が続いていく。

セールスを上げるためには、インパクトが必要かもしれないが、派手さや性急さや奇抜さを全く排除したこの音楽は、やはり強靭だと思わざるを得ない。代用品の効かない音楽は何より貴重である。
暇な夕暮れ時、思い出したように、淡々と聴くと抜群にいいです。

木製の手作りおもちゃのような感触。実際おもちゃの楽器が頻繁に使われています。切なさと楽しさが見事にマッチング。子供と大人が同居している音楽というべきか。NRBQというアメリカのバンドが参加したMy Merodiesは名曲です。　インスト曲が何曲か入ってますがアメリカのTV番組のテーマソングみたいな雰囲気でなつかしさいっぱいです。

ひたすらポップ。ポップという意味において、ありとあらゆるエッセンスを詰め込んだこのアルバムは、日本の、いや世界のポップ史上、最高傑作ではないかと思う。そして文字通りuniverseなのです。この雑食性はとんでもない。鬼畜のポップ職人と呼びたい。もちろん、いい意味ですよ。
