"The best of Sade"なるアルバムも出ていますが、本当の意味での彼女のベスト盤は今でもこれだと思っています。後に出てきたソフトなポップス調のヒット曲もいいですが、Jazzっぽいこちらの方が彼女のハスキーな声の魅力をより引き出していると思います。

SADEのデビューアルバム。サウンドはすでに完成していて、何の迷いもない。バンドのメンバーもこの時以来不動の4名。プロデューサーは、盲目の名プロデューサー、ロビン・ミラー。彼のサウンド・コントロールなのだろうが、SADEのアルバムの中で、最もジャージーな雰囲気が強く、夜の気配が漂う。楽曲は、彼女のいつものことだけど、粒ぞろい。特にベストアルバムに収められていないもの「FRANKIES FIRST AFFAIR」「I WILL BE YOUR FRIEND」「WHY CAN'T WE LIVE TOGETHER」などがいいので、ベスト盤でしかSADEを知らない人で、もっと大人っぽい彼女の歌を聴いてみたいという人は、このアルバムはマストアイテムです（ベスト盤は頭の3曲だけだけど、このアルバムの聴きどころは、後半にあると思う）。終わり2曲が超カッコ良くて、しびれます。

ファッションモデル顔負け、ルックス抜群の女性ボーカリスト”シャーデイ”のデビュー作。彼女の名前は本名ヘレン・フォラシャーデイ・アドゥのミドルネームに由来するが、それは同時にユニット名でもあるらしい。ジャズっぽくもあり、R&Bっぽくもある都会派音楽に乗せたムーディなボーカルがどこまでもお洒落だ。お洒落だけれども彼女の歌う世界は一筋縄ではいかない。あるときは天国、一歩間違えば地獄といった大都会に渦巻く甘く危険な恋をテーマにした曲が続く。アルバム「ダイアモンド・ライフ」は名曲である#1｢スムーズ・オペレーター｣や#2「ユア・ラヴ・イズ・キング」に始まり、約50分こんな危険な世界を疑似体験させてくれる。彼女のいたずらに誇張を行わない、どちらかと言えばコントロールされた歌いっぷりににじみでる情念はまさにダイアモンドの輝きを持って迫ってくるだろう。
