19世紀後半にウィーンで活躍し、「シバの女王」などのオペラで作曲家として大成功を博したゴルトマルクの代表作に、若きサラ・チャンが挑戦した一枚。作品が内包している美しい歌やドラマチックな熱気、そして困難な名技性をともに満たしつつ、分厚い美音を駆使して堂々たる名演を繰り広げている。華やかな見せ場でも余裕綽々で、なにやら大家の風格すら漂ってくるような演奏になっている。この曲のディスクとしては、今年、ベルとサロネンのディスクが出たばかりだが、サラ・チャンとコンロンのコンビは、よりロマンティックで迫真性に富んだアプローチを展開している。併録曲のアイスキュロスの悲劇に基づいた序曲は、メンデルスゾーンをベースにブラームス風の厚みを加えた響きを発する典型的な“ロマン派”のオーケストラ作品。コンロンとオーケストラの共感あふれる演奏によって、この手応えに満ちた知られざる佳曲に触れることができることを喜びたい。 (満津岡信育) --- 2001年01月号
