苦闘の果ての安息や重労働の後の休息にこのアルバムはもってこいであるからして、暮れもおしせまってから大晦日に聴くと染みることうけあいだ。落語の「芝浜」のような盤である。闘病生活を乗り越え、息子の手助けもあり、三たびリック・ルービンのプロデュースのもと、珠玉の歌を束ねてくれた。トム・ペティとのデュエット「俺は引き下がらない」の静かなる決意表明にはじまり、U2、ニール・ダイアモンド、ニック・ケイヴ、デイヴィッド・アラン・コウ、マール・ハガードらの作品を厳しく育て上げるように歌う。鍛えることが親しみを生む。伝承バラッドやスピリチュアル・ソングなどは逆にゆるやかな空気をまとう。ウィル・オールダムとのデュエットを聴くうちに、キャッシュのみならず、歌は求めるところにおのずと誠意の河を作り出すものだとしみじみ思う。これも生きる伝統芸能だが、歌の力は新鮮である。ここには濁った響きがひとつもない。透き通った夜の空気さえ感じさせる音楽だ。 (湯浅学) --- 2001年01月号

本当に単純に『凄い』と思った。声が凄い。このバリトンには人間の色んな要素を感じる。
人の人生の貴重さ、素晴らしさが伝わる反面、人間の暗さ、ネガティブな要素も感じ取れる。実際、レビューに記された彼の人生を拝読して（と言っても全くの触り程度にだけれども）やはり驚いた。彼の声は人間の声だ。

1の曲風とキャシュの歌声とに感動し、2のイントロには痺れ、345で歌声に惚れた。4はＵ2を通して知っていたけれど、キャッシュの歌声による4は、それよりも感銘を受けた。67は原曲を知っていたが、こちらもオリジナルよりも感動した。特に7は言及出来ない程。8910の包容力や深みの在るボーカルや、11のノスタルジックな雰囲気、12は頭から離れないし13のＭ・ハガードとのデュエットも気持ち良い。最後の14!は!!、人生を終える旅人が逝くと言う霊歌らしいのだけれど、宗教観を越えて、救いについて考えさせられる。

カントリーと言う枠に止まらず、選曲にも編曲にも色んな試みが伺える。是非沢山の人に聴いていただきたい。

三度リック・ルービンと組んだ作品で、
シリーズの1stに立ちかえったよう。
（前作はバンドを従えていましたが、今作はシンプルに生ギターが基本）
オープニングはトム・ペティのI Want Back Down。
シェリル・クロウとのデュエットあり。
U2のOneは楽曲の骨格を聞いているようで凄い。
あいかわらずの生っぽい楽器の音の録り方はリック節健在。

4年間待っていた甲斐があった！！
（前作は1996年、1994年）

ＣＤショップで視聴した時、冒頭の1曲めから彼の低く深い声に引き込まれました。自分は彼についてはよく知らず、Ｕ２のＺＯＯＲＯＰＡにゲスト参加していた有名なカントリーシンガーという認識しかなかったのですが、シェリルクロウやトムペティなどゲスト陣をみても彼がいかに愛されているシンガーであるかがわかります。

ゲスト陣とのハーモニーも聴き所ですが、全体に”声と歌を聴ける”良い曲が揃っていると思います。
Ｕ２の”ＯＮＥ”も彼の声とよくマッチしていて、原曲とは違った味が出ています。一度聴いてみて下さい。
