Ｒ＆Ｂシンガーと言われ売れてきた頃に、自分で書いたセクシー路線の歌詞について聞かれ、「うそっぱちですもん（笑）」との答えに複雑な気持ちになったことがあったが、この「Stare At」にあるのは、等身大の平井堅なのだろう。
全曲作詞しており、ライナーナーツにも”my 12 short tales”とある。

小さい頃からの夢、そして現在の自分を書いた「ステージ」、寝不足でゲッソリした顔でお茶をヤケ飲みする姿が目に浮かぶ「なぜだろう」、とても仲のいい親友との関係を書いたであろう「くされ縁」、”恋は気づけば始まる簡単なもの””だけど愛は努力して育てていかなきゃいけない”などと、思わず頷く「泣いて笑って」、先のことはわからないけど、ずっと一緒にいたいという願いに何故か涙が出る「ゆびきり」、彼の家族はあたたかいのだろうなと思わせる「キャッチボール」・・・。
ほぼ全て自ら作曲（提供１曲、共作１曲）の楽曲も、アップテンポなポップスからしっとりした切ないバラードまで、良質なものが揃っている。
各曲のどれもが１枚のアルバムとして順に聴いて違和感がないので、飛ばしたり順を変えたりしたくなることはない。

もし、「今の平井堅は好きだけど、そんな前のアルバムなど今聴いたら古く感じそうだ」と思っている人がいたら、是非聴いてみてほしい。
平井堅自作の詞が好きならなおさらだ。
８年経った今はもちろん、おそらく何年経っても色あせることのない、２４歳のシンガー・ソングライターのスナップを集めたアルバムである。

詳しい描写や説明なんかなくても、限られた文字数で表現する歌の詩には、その情景、その時の想いが、ありありと目の前にひらけて、瞬時に理解することが出来ると思う。それは経験からくるものでもあり、想像の翼を広げるものでもある。共感と、似た色を放つ言葉のモザイクが、胸の中に深く沈み込む。一つ一つに込められた想いやせつなさが、十二編のショート・ストーリーを歌い上げているようにきこえる作品だ。
