そのとき僕はパリにすんでいました。ある日ニュースでイブモンタンが死んだ知らせが流れていました。そのときこの映画に彼がでていることは知りませんでした。欧米の大都市によく見られるアートな落書きで始まるこの作品は、若者、子供、老人の不思議な出会いとそれから繰り広げられる、これまた不思議な旅の中にそれぞれの心象を織り込みながら静かに流れていく超感覚的要素ももった映画です。

この映画には、一般的に「フランス映画」と聞いて思い浮かぶような華やかなイメージはない。当時まだ若手であった監督が、「ディーバ」で見せたようなスピード感や、「ロザリンとライオン」「ベティーブルー」で見せた若くて青い瑞々しさもない。全体にあるのは、当時のフランスの不景気と、薄暗く底の見えない停滞感である。これは、陰気な映画なのだろうか？まったくそのようなことはない。この映画は、間違いなく監督ジャン・ジャック・ベネックスの最高傑作であるばかりでなく、映画が人々に生きる勇気を与えてくれるのだというメッセージがこもった作品である。フランスの名優イヴ・モンタンの遺作であるこの作品は、彼が晩年まで映画に対する情熱を失っていなかったことが伺える。この老人の役を選んだのも、おそらく死が迫っていることをある程度予感していたのだろうと思われる。印象的なシーンがある。死んだはずのウサギがモンタン演ずる不思議な老人の手に触れ生き返る。森の中で空を見上げ、エネルギーを吸収するかのように全身で雨を浴びる。声が森にこだまする。彼が演じた不思議な老人は、まさにイヴ・モンタン本人だ。劇中の不思議な出来事が現実と交錯する。イヴ・モンタンは、この映画の公開を待たずして亡くなった。撮影時の無理が原因で心臓発作を起こした（そのシーンは見ればわかる）わけだが、彼は人生をまったく後悔していない。見た人は、彼が自身の死と引換えにこの映画に託したメッセージをきっと感じるだろう。この映画の成功は当時若手と言われていたジャン・ジャック・ベネックス監督を歴史に残る監督に仲間入りさせた。ただ、そのプレッシャーからか？監督はこれ以後約10年弱の長いスランプに陥る。苦労が多かったのかベネックス監督には、すでに以前のようなスマートかつ繊細な風貌は残されていない。
