　ソウルやＡＯＲには知る人ぞ知る名盤というのが多いが，これもそんな１枚。アメリカン・ソング・フェスティバルで優勝するなど将来を嘱望されるが，デビュー作となる本作を発表後，数ヶ月で廃盤となる不運に見舞われ，ブレイクには至らず。ただ，内容的には素晴しい。
　冒頭のアッケラカンとしたＲ＆Ｒナンバーの「Baby Fat」はＡＯＲファン向きではないかもしれないが，続くタイトル曲「Blame It On The Night」は，朝焼けのように爽やかで何処となくほろ苦いタッチのバラード。「一夜限りの情熱」という意味なるのだろうか。これが転じて「ワン・ナイト・ロマンス」という邦題になっている。「That Didn’t Hurt Too Bad」も透明感のあるメロウなバラード。フルートやギターの取り入れ方が効果的だ。サックスの響きがムーディーなミッドテンポ「I Did It All For Love」，ジャジーなピアノの調べが印象的な「Tell Me It’s Over One More Time」などはいかにもＡＯＲらしいナンバー。
　ブルージーな「Southern Gun」，静かな歌い出しから一転してグッと盛り上がるサビが印象的なバラード「She Put The Sad In All His Songs」もイイ。
　よくあるタイプと言えばそれまでだが，’79年発表にもかかわらず，今聴いても瑞々しく心安らぐメロディーが多い。一過性の流行に流されない本物志向の音楽だからなのだろう。地味ではあるが，聴いておきたいアルバムの１つだ。

最高です。アルバムのタイトル曲とThat didn't hurt too badは彼の名曲。ですが彼、2005年に亡くなってしまったそうです。だから彼の哀愁を帯びた歌声を聞くと正直泣きそうになります。とにかく名盤。

1954年デトロイト生まれの彼は早くから音楽に親しみ，流行のフォークやロックをやっていた。18才でロスへ出たものの仕事はなく，バンドは解散。細々曲を売り歩く日々を送る。そんな彼に目を付けたのが，モータウン初の白人制作チームだったクレイトン・アイヴィとテリー・ウッドフォード。専属契約を交わしたバーンは，1977年に全米作曲祭ポップス部門で優勝。翌年にはカントリー部門でも優勝し，デビューのチャンスを手にする。

無名の新人を取り敢えず売るためには仕方なかったのだろう。クリームをパクりつつも，何とも空々しいR&B調が《タモリ倶楽部》にしか聞こえない冒頭1)にはゲンナリ。しかし，これが客寄せパンダだったことは，別人の如く豹変する２曲目以降が証明する。キャリアを裏打ける西海岸フォーク・ロックの懐かしげな香りがAORと彩りよく絡む。ディン・ドナヒューやマイケル・マクドナルドらに共通する，セピア色の甘美なソフト・ロック。白眉の2)を核に，どれも徹頭徹尾趣味が良い。

これほどの作品を創りながら，取り巻きの意向で作らされたであろう1)は100位にも入れず，本国では一年も経たずに廃盤。彼は２年後，のちブライアン・マックナイトを手掛けることになるブランドン・バーンズと連名であと一枚アルバムを制作するも，本国ではリリースも許されず。やがて裏方に回り，散発的に活動を続けていたが，先頃ひっそりと世を去った。20年を経てなお，こういう録音のCD化に邁進する日本のファンは遙かに心暖かく，いい耳をしていると感心する。
