原作にあるデュマの「三銃士」にまつわるウンチクをきれいにそぎ落としてオカルト部分だけ５倍位濃くした感じになっています。「これは大人のおとぎ話」と監督のロマン。ポランスキーが言っていました。そうそう、このDVDは監督が最初から最後まで作品について語ってくれるといるオマケがついているのです。「このシーンはフランスのどこどこでロケした」とか「ここのジョニー・デップの演技がよかった」などと当時の撮影を振り返っています。その他、ゲームや謎の９枚の絵の比較などもついていて付録が充実したDVDでした。

ロマン・ポランスキーが贈る作品には味がある。
彼が手がけた怪奇スリラーは独特の味を残しつつ、
感慨深い作品へと仕上がっている。
ジョニー・ディップの好演も見どころのひとつ。

老人の男性が書庫で首をつるシーンからいきなり始る。ハッとしていると朗々としたオーケストラのかなでる音楽の中、９個の門がひとつひとつ開かれていくのにあわせて出演者たちの名前が紹介される。目にも耳にもなかなか美しいシーンです。

悪魔祈祷書の真贋の調査を依頼され、つきまとう不思議な若い女性（ポランスキーの奥様だそうです）に助けられながら依頼人にいわれるまま、右往左往。身の周りに殺人事件が起こりだし、観ているほうも引き込まれていきます。あっと息をのむラスト。

口をぽかんと開けている間に、今度は、炎が揺らめく画面をバックに女性オペラ歌手の透き通る声が、メインテーマを奏でます。これがまた美しいのです。

ストーリーはとても気になる終わり方ですね。そこがいいのではないでしょうか？
