　後に「新世紀エヴァンゲリオン」を創る庵野監督の初監督作品です。この作品の見所は、全編に散りばめられた過去のアニメ・特撮ものなどのパロディやオマージュ、そして序盤のコメディタッチの展開やタイトル（映画「トップ・ガン」とアニメ「エースをねらえ！」を足して２で割ったもの（笑））からは想像もつかない、ハードなＳＦ設定とシナリオの壮大さでしょう。
　この第１巻では、タイトルどおりのスポコンもの定番の展開が続きますが、それがあまりにもお約束な展開であるがゆえに、パロディものとしてもしっかり笑える内容になっています（鉄下駄のシーンには大笑いしました（謎））。

　万人に薦められる内容のものではないとは思いますが、私にとっては大傑作で、何度も繰り返し見た（しかも観れば見るほど味が出る？）作品です。学園コメディ（？）の序盤から、全銀河をも巻き込む壮大なラストへと展開していくシナリオの絶妙さは、まさに奇跡とも言えるほどで、ロボットやＳＦアニメ、スポ根ものなどが好きな人には絶対のお勧めです。

エヴァンゲリオンで有名になってしまった、ガイナックス＆庵野秀明監督の作品なのですが、オリジナルビデオアニメーション（ＯＶＡ）という、当時まだそのジャンルを確立しきっていなかった未発達の分野で発表されたために、長らくその真価を認められなかった不遇の作品。

導入部分のストーリーやキャラクターは旧来のアニメ、特撮などからあからさまに引っ張ってきた感があり、この作品をパロディ物、オマージュ物という評価に押しとどめているのかも。
しかし、そんなマニアが気楽に楽しんでいた作風は、後半を境にがらっと豹変。まさしく、超一級ハードＳＦアニメとして昇華していきます。

そして最後まで見た後の全体としての印象と、その高密度な情報量とで、このトップをねらえ！を数多のロボッ!トアニメの中で突出した存在として際だたせています。

そんなトップの面白さは、作り手のエゴの一切感じられない徹底したサービス精神と、ＯＶＡという「買わなきゃ見れない」アニメならではのクオリティに支えられており、設定、キャラクター、音楽、声優、物語、メカニックのどの部分にも異常なまでのこだわりと愛が見て取れます。

珠玉の３０分×６話。笑って、泣けて、感動して、かっこいい！

絶対、見て損無し、むしろ見なきゃ損の一押しロボットアニメです。
正直、今から初めてトップを見て、あの感動を味わうことのできる人がうらやましいくらい。

　八十年代を代表する、いいや、ＯＶＡというメディアそのもを代表する傑作であることに異論はない。そもそもＯＶＡ（オリジナル・ビデオ・アニメ）というマーケットがなかったら絶対制作できなかったという意味において、たいへん貴重な作品である。

　最初から最後まで、「わかる人には一目瞭然」的なパロディというか、構図、セリフ、シチュエーションなどの旧作からの膨大な引用があり、たしか前半部が発表された段階では「若い奴等の内輪受け的な悪ふざけ」ぐらいにしか評価されていなかった。が、最終巻で第五話、第六話が発表されるや否や、すくなくとも悪評ががくりと減った。

　かなり特別な時期に、特別なスタッフたちの手において制作された、特別な作品であるということは間違いない。
一言でいうなら、「空前絶後」、な作品なのである。
