　歴史モノ、中でも幕末モノにどうしても惹かれてしまう自分が
います。学校の授業では、旧幕府軍というのは悪者で新政府軍は
正義という図式になっています（私の受けた印象では）。

　しかし、旧幕府軍にも彼らなりに背負っているもの（旧幕臣の
生活）があり、それを守るために新天地蝦夷地に向かったという
事情がありました。

　歴史教育というのは、現政権に都合のいいように作られている
ものです。社会科学というのは、単眼では片手落ちです、複眼で
判断する必要があります。この、戊辰戦争というものも旧体制と
新体制の対決という視点でとらえますが、旧体制にも正義はあっ
たと思います。

　さだまさしが歌う、主題歌『夢の吹く頃』もドラマの内容に
あっていて、とってもお勧めです。せつなくて、涙が出てきま
す。ときどき、口ずさんでしまいます。「夢がーゆく、夢が行
く~。あの橋のぼれ~、この橋のぼれ~、強く、強く、強く~」。

　明治維新といえば、坂本龍馬、西郷隆盛、高杉晋作・・・別のレヴューでも同じようなことが書かれていました。上の三人は、暗殺、（乱を起こした末の）自決、夭折と、俗な言い方ですが、「ドラマチック」な死に方をしています。このドラマの主役の一人、土方歳三もまた然りです。

　しかし一方で榎本は、生き残り、政府要職を歴任します。それを生き恥と解釈する人もいるでしょう。しかし函（箱）館戦争中の彼には、武士としての意地の他に、国に対する、人に対する「愛」や「夢」があったのではないかと思っています。賊軍になろうとも、国家百年の計のため、あるいは愛する人のために戦う…。そんな熱い思いを敗者の側から描いています。そしてインテリ特有の理想主義にとらわれながら、榎本その人がいかに情熱的な人であったかが判ります。
　映像的に少しばかり難はありますが、それはやはり時間の経過故避けられないこと。渡哲也の「装飾過多」というのでしょうか、オーバーアクトに辟易しなければ、それなりに楽しめるかと。

幕末期に幕府側を描く場合、勝海舟にスポットが当たる事が多いと思います。(同シリーズでも後年製作されています。) しかしこの作品は榎本武揚という、勝海舟とは反対の生き方をした人物がメインで描かれておりとても新鮮に感じました。ただ自分の勉強不足なのですが、当時放送で見た時は榎本武揚って誰？といった感じで、五稜郭すら知らなかったお馬鹿な学生だった事も事実です。何せ函館戦争の存在自体が知識にありませんでしたから。(明治維新は戊辰戦争⇒西南戦争の流れだと思っていました。その間の函館戦争はスッポリ抜けていました。) また蝦夷が新撰組終焉の地であった事や、副長土方の壮烈な最後なども当時初めて知った覚えがあります。そういう意味では、色々と勉強になった作品でもありました。ただし難を言えば、35歳の土方歳三を渡哲也では、イメージは合うのですが年齢的に厳しいのではと思いましたが...。また海戦シーンが多いのですが、どうしても映像で見ると玩具に見えてしまうのは、製作さられた年代を考えると仕方がありませんかね。五稜郭という作品は、自分にとっては様々な意味で印象に残っている作品です。改めてDVDにて見直しても、やはり見応え(特に後篇)があり面白い作品でした。前篇の時は前作田原坂の西郷隆盛と、今作の榎本武揚が同じ役者さん(里見浩太朗)の為に被って見えて難儀しましたが。でも後篇には違和感は消えていましたから、それ程面白い作品なのだと思います。前々作「白虎隊」、前作「田原坂」と併せて見る事をお勧めします。
