『Love Letter』で一躍日本映画界の寵児となった岩井俊二監督が、近未来の日本を舞台に、斬新な映像感覚で作品である。
東京湾には「円都（イェンタウン）」と呼ばれる無国籍地帯が広がり、アジア各国からの移民も多く住んでいる。娼婦のグリコは、母親を殺された少女アゲハと一緒に暮らしていた。ストーリーは、偽札作りやグリコが歌手として成功していく様子、アゲハの母親捜しなどが絡みあいながら展開していく。
英語、中国語、日本語がとびかう無国籍感覚と、アゲハたちが広大な空き地に作ったコミューン感覚が、閉塞した日本の現状に対するアンチテーゼとなっている。My Little Lover がライブハウスに出演していたりと、PV出身の岩井監督らしさがあふれる意欲作だ。（堤 昌司）
