かつてフランク・ザッパバンドでギタリストを務めた「変態ギタリストの雄」Steve Vaiによる記念すべきソロ第1弾です。1984年発表当時は、アナログ盤ミニアルバムでしたが、CD化にあたって「Leftovers」というタイトルのボーナストラックが4曲追加されて、全15曲構成になっています。ちなみに旧Ａ面が「Flexサイド」、旧Ｂ面が「Ableサイド」として位置付けられています。アナログ盤がリリースされた当時はまさに前代未聞の変態ギタリストの登場ということで、マニア筋では異常なほどの高評価を得ていたことはまだ記憶に新しいところです。とにかく「変な曲」「変なギタープレイと超絶技巧」「予測不能な展開」という変態ギタリストにとっては欠かせない3大要素を完璧に備えたギタリストは、Vaiが初めての存在だったことは誰しもが認めることです。

1曲目の「Little Green Men」でのわけがわからないチャット、聴いたことのない変拍子、そしてどこから飛んで来るかがまったく予想できない変態フレーズの嵐、とどれをもっても新鮮な驚きの連続で、個人的には「80年代のジミヘン誕生！」と勝手に興奮していたことを思い出します。そしてこのアルバムの極めつけは「Salamanders In The Sun」で聴かれる国籍不明のうねるような変態ギターでしょう。これだけギターという楽器がもつ表現力を極限まで追求したプレイヤーは、Vai以降出現していないと断言できますし、いまなお第一線を張る限りない表現力には驚きの一語です。いまは亡きフランク・ザッパの遺志を正しく継承するとともに、ギターとしての表現力にあくなき探求心をもつ稀有なプレイヤーが作り上げた素晴らしいアルバムをぜひ聴いていただきたいと思います。

１９８４年リリースの記念すべきスティーブヴァイのファーストアルバム・・・当時は自主制作で販売されていたようです。（もちろんアナログでの販売）内容ははっきり言って「変」「奇妙」なものです・・・実験的な作品で、フランクザッパを敬愛する彼ならではの曲が堪能出来ます！！おなじみの曲「アティチュードソング」はかっこいいですよね・・・ヴァイ・スチュワートハム（Ｂ）・クリスフレイジャー（Ｄｒ）のトリオによる演奏がビシバシ決まります。１０曲目のしゃべるギターで、彼の変態ぶりを再確認出来ます・・・ここまで出来る演奏テクニックは本当凄い！！つながる１１曲目も締めくくりに相応しい変な曲。ロックだけに括る事の出来ないミュージシャンなので、このアルバムを聴くときはいろんな観
