さて、白盤に対するこの赤盤も究極のコンピ盤。ビクター保有のリバーサイド、プレスティッジのジャズの代表的超名演のオンパレードだ。こちらにはリバーサイド時代のビル・エヴァンスがいる。『セント・トーマス』のソニー・ロリンズがいる。“4部作”の頃のマイルス・デイヴィスも収録だ。人気レーベルの人気曲がもれなく並んでいるところが圧巻。曲の並びも秀逸で、各々のレーベル・カラーが透けて見えたりして面白い。こうしてみると50年代の輝かしい記録が21世紀にも受け継がれていくようで感慨深い。 (編集部) --- 2000年11月号

「ジャズ・ミレニアム」シリーズ第一弾。
その後に出た、他のジャズ・コンピシリーズと比べると曲数は少なめですが、どこかで耳にした事のある有名曲、そして名演がズラリ！！で、取っ付き易く、入門には最適でした。
曲数もむしろこのくらいの方が聞き込み易いのでは？

音もしっとりと温かみのあるリマスタリングが施されており、半世紀近く前の録音とは思えないほど、鮮明。
また、このシリーズは紙ジャケット（「デジパック」というのかな？）仕様で、「大事に持っていたい」、「シリーズを揃えたい」という気持ちにさせられたのも、魅力のひとつ。

世の中にコンピレーション盤は数あれど、これに勝るものはそうざらにないだろう。まさにミレニアムにふさわしい豪華メンバーによるベスト盤である。単にメンバーをそろえるだけでもすごいのだが、決定的名演が目白押し。ジェリー・マリガンの プレリュード:ホ短調はかつての油井正一氏が担当したアスペクト・イン・ジャズのテーマ。 セント・トーマスはいわずと知れたソニー・ロリンズの最高傑作、モリタートから、 ユード・ビー・ソー・ナイス・トゥ・カム・ホーム・トゥはヘレン・メリル・ウィズ・クリフォード・ブラウン、 ワーク・ソング、蓮の花はナット・アダレイ、ケニー・ドーハムの代表作、 コートにすみれをとラウンド・ミッドナイトはジョン・コルトレーン、マイルス・デイヴィスの前期を代表するバラード演奏。ワルツ・フォー・デビイ、朝日のようにさわやかに、Cジャム・ブルースといずれもビル・エヴァンス、M.J.Q、レッド・ガーランドの代表的名演だ。いずれにしてもこのコンピ盤と出会えば初心者でもジャズの素晴らしさがきっと肌でわかるものと確信するお奨めのアルバムだ。
