　十代の終わり頃から、ティムバックリーやヴァンモリソン、トムウェイツと並べて私のリスペクトミュージシャンでした。ガットギターの静けさ、様々な弦楽器・管楽器のアレンジ。ゾンビーズのコリン・ブルンストーンを思わせるソフトな歌声でありながら、楽曲はトラッド・フォークであり、ボサノヴァであり、ソウル。全てがアコースティックな質感で統一されながら、美しく余計な音がありません。アレンジの最高域がここにはあると思います。
　２ｎｄアルバムは、ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドのジョン・ケイルがプロデュースですが、彼らしからぬポップなアレンジ。しかし、これまたいい。ホテルの目覚まし的なクラシックの様に聞こえますが、そこは凡百のイージーリスニングとは違う職人芸！現代では、エリオット・スミス等がニック・ドレイクの生まれ変わりの様に言われたりするみたいですが、うなずく半面、腰にくるグルーブを感じるのも事実。そこらへんにオリジナリティと、魅力が隠されているのではないでしょうか？
　生前、彼のレコードコレクションにはティムバックリーなんかもあったという事を何かの記事で読みましたが、その類似性、芸術家気質、現地の高校では未だに破られない短距離走の記録保持者という経歴を持つのも彼ならでは。１９０ｃｍを越える巨人の持つ繊細さ、ランボオというより、ヴェルレーヌの様な、淡い優しさと帰れなくなった孤独者の雰囲気がレコード前編に漂うと共に、誰にも土足で荒らされる事のない静かな悟りがここにはあります。

いつもNick Drakeを聴く度に、素朴な疑問を浮かべてしまうのだが、一体なぜこんな風に音楽を作ることができたのだろうか。何を聴いたからこんな音楽になったのだろうか。わずか40分ほどのアルバムに過ぎないと言うのに、ここまで飽きさせない作品も稀だと思う。ロックというジャンルには留まらず、もっと広い観点で評価されるべきだったのではないか、と考えてしまう。作品の魅力に大きな役割を果たしているのが、Nickのギタリストとしての技術であるのは間違いない。豊かな技量があったからこそ、「Three Hours」の張り詰めた緊張感も、「'Cello Song」の軽やかさも、アコースティック・ギターだけで表現することができたのだ。ここまでのギタリストには、滅多にお目にかかれないのではあるまいか。それともう１つ、独特な歌詞もまた、Nick Drakeの魅力だ。モールバラという名門パブリック・スクールを出た後、ケンブリッジへ進んで英文を学んだNick Drakeだが、豊かな読書量を感じさせるモチーフや言葉遣いもまた、作品の滅びない理由だ。リマスターされてアイランドから出たというのは、喜ばしいことだ。

「Ｒｉｖｅｒ　Ｍａｎ」の哀しさが素晴らしい。胸が痛くなるほどだ。
小林秀雄を真似て言うなら、「ニックのかなしさは疾走する。涙は追いつけない」
ピアノの音が軽やかな、「Ｍａｎ　Ｉｎ　Ａ　Ｓｈｅｄ」も秀逸。
