ドライなロックが定評のダイアー・ストレイツのフロント・マン。96年のソロ・デビュー作以来4年ぶり、2枚目のソロ・アルバムだ。元スクイーズのG・ティルブルックなどがゲスト参加。

2本のサントラ仕事を手掛け昨年には50の大台に乗ったノップラーの4年ぶり2作目のソロ。前『ゴールデン・ハート』同様ナッシュヴィルの敏腕エンジニア、チャック・エインレイとの共同制作で、ジェイムス・テイラー、ヴァン・モリソン、元スクイーズの二人などとの共演もある。ブルースやロックンロールをやろうとカントリーの匂いをさせようと、あの語り口調の歌とギターの対話で綴られるノップラー節の音楽だ。が、感触は柔らか。基本リズム隊のもう一人のギターや二人の客演ペダル・スティール、ヴァイオリンなどの弦楽器が添える暖色の彩り、管の在り方もしかりで、いい陽を浴びて覚える弛緩と充足感に似たものが旋律~サウンドにある。ゆえか(10)後半のかつてを思わすスピード感ある展開がまた新鮮で、こんなに表情あった!~ と歌への思いも新たにする。ある情景をイントロで想い、短編小説を読むように聴き進む……と、いくつもの人生のシーンを見た気になる。 (松永記代美) --- 2000年11月号

内容はものすごくいい。今のノップラーの充実ぶりが伺える仕上がりだ。
なんと言っても驚きはデュエットソングの存在で、ノップラーが自分のボーカルに自信を深めていることがよくわかる。（日本人のほとんどは彼のボーカルを「下手だ」と言うが、彼の狙いがそういう点にないことはすぐにわかりそうなものなのだが）

ガッカリするのは同梱のライナーの日本語訳詞で、作品の空気をまったく読めていないのがよくわかる訳文には、正直、失笑させられた。

ノップラーがこれを知ったら怒るだろうなぁ。わりと凝った詩を書くヒトだからなぁ。

Knopflerの渋さ爆発？の二枚目。やる気なさげに聴こえるボーカル？も相変わらずでいいのですが…、このアルバムは前作よりも曲が充実していて、この質の高さはDire Straits時代にもないぐらい。サウンドも充実。ドラムのChad Cromwellのプレイは前作から注目していたが、今回もすばらしい。
ゲストも2でJames Tayler、5でVan Morrisonと豪華。

どの曲もいいのですが、個人的にはKnopflerらしい渋くカッコいい1、段々と盛り上がっていく6、Knopflerのソロとドラムとヴァイオリンの絡みがすばらしい10、静かな雰囲気でアルバムを締める13がお勧めです。
