   山口百恵の引退作品とあって、巨匠市川崑監督が登板。川端康成の原作をもとに、山口百恵が最初で最後の二役に挑戦した作品。
   京呉服問屋の一人娘として何不自由なく美しく育った佐田千重子（山口百恵）は、中学生の時父母（實川延若／岸恵子）から実子でないことを知らされる。千重子は幼馴染の真一（北詰友樹）にだけ、自分の身上を打ち明けた。ある日千重子は友だちの正子（泉じゅん）と清滝川沿いの北山杉の村に行ったところ、自分そっくりな村の娘に出会う。苗子（山口百恵）というその娘と千重子は双児の姉妹だった。
   京都の美しい自然を背景に、実の姉妹であるふたりの娘が偶然出逢い、そして別れる。たったそれだけの話であるが、市川崑の演出は、芸能生活のフィナーレを迎えた山口百恵を愛おしむかのようなタッチで、静かにショットを重ねていく。鑑賞後もじわりとした余韻が心地よく残る名編。（斉藤守彦）

一人二役の山口百恵さん。この映画の舞台は京都。百恵さんは京都の出身ではありませんが、街中の呉服屋さんの娘役と北山の娘役の雰囲気や表情を良く演じておられると思います。化粧の違いも良いと思います。京都の気質をご存じ無い方には微妙な雰囲気を読み取ることは難しいかもしれませんが、監督の市川昆さんは巧くそのあたりを描いていると思います。僕は冒頭の帯の衣擦れの音が好きです。内容が時代性・ローカル性が強く、テーマも地味なので一般受けはしないかもしれません。評価はあくまでも僕の個人的な趣味ですので悪しからず。

　二度目の映画化作品。前回の中村登監督版は原作に比較的忠実だったと思う。品格はあったが、映画としては面白味に欠けた観があった。しからば、今回はどうか。原作にない人物（三浦友和が扮した青年）などや設定の違いはあるものの、私には違和感がなかった。
　主演の山口百恵が関東出身で京都弁に難がある点、家業の番頭にアクがない点がマイナスだが、この監督の京都描写はいつも見事と思った。父親役の實川延若が実にいい味である。着物の着る動作など流石だ。これが確か映画初出演だったと思う。

いくつかある「古都」の映画化の中で、映像の美しさでは随一だろう。しっとりとした京情緒をかもし出す映像だ。町屋や北山杉の情景も美しく撮られている。内容的にも原作の描くところの世界をそれなりにきちんと出している。しかし、原作から離れ過ぎている点に難がある。その際たるものは、山口百恵の相手役として三浦友和を出演させるために、無理やり苗子の恋人役の青年を作っていることだ。これには驚いた。せっかく落ち着いた効果を出している、控えめで手堅い演出が、一挙に帳消しになってしまっている。そして後半部が長い。冗長。125分の作品だが、15分つづめて110分作品にするべきだった。
