東京&ロスでレコーディングされた2年半ぶりのオリジナル・アルバム。瀬尾一三を音楽プロデューサー兼アレンジャーに迎え、自作ナンバーの音楽世界をさらに堪能できる内容をものにした。

中島みゆきの歌が単なる“フラれ歌”にとどまらない秘密は冷徹な目にある。フラれてイジイジしている自分を歌っているようでいて、その実、そんな女の子を冷静に見つめる彼女の視線が感じられる。傷ついた心を赤裸々に吐露している歌と受け止めるだけでは、あまりにも単純すぎる。進むことも帰ることもできず、ただ途方に暮れるしかない人生の一瞬を失恋という事象に託して歌っているのだ。11篇のショート・ストーリーで構成された『短篇集』にはまさに人生の片々がちりばめられ、ストーリーテラーとしての才がいかんなく発揮されている。彼女はまるで男の子のようにはにかみ、テレる。その中性的な視点が、たとえば(2)をただの“人生の応援歌”に終わらせず、(9)をそれでもなお生きていかなければならない“辛さ”を感じさせる世界にまで昇華させた。そして見事に歌いあげている。この人の凄みは本物だ。それはシンガーとかソングライターとかいったレベルを超えた、存在そのものの凄みなのだ。 (平原康司) --- 2000年11月号

素晴らしいミュージシャンである。
この人を知らないのはとても損をしていると思う。
こだわりの1枚といっても過言ではない。
アーチスト中島みゆきをぜひ聴いて欲しい。
言葉にこだわりがある。かといって音楽が陳腐なわけではない。臨場感あふれる歌声をぜひ聴いて欲しい。

中島みゆきは、以前から暗いイメージがあり、ヒット曲以外は聴いてなかったが、「空と君のあいだに」あたりから注目して聴きはじめた。最近「地上の星」の大ブレークで「Singleｓ２０００」が良く聴かれているが、「地上の星」の入ったＣＤでは、こちらの方が中島節炸裂で聴き応えがある。全曲とにかく素晴らしい。

中島みゆきとは1曲では到底理解できない物凄い
スケールのあるアーティストですが、このアルバムは
全曲ストーリー性に満ちていてコンパクトにいろいろ
わかるいいアルバムだと思います。
「後悔」では彼女の絶唱が聞けますし、
シングルの「ヘッドライト・テールライト」では
本当に心のやさしい人なのだろうと理解できます。

個人的には「結婚」みたいな歌をきちんと出せるのも
好きだし、「Tell Me ,Sister」は実際に大切な人を
なくした人なら何度聞いても感動すると思います。

とにかく、それぞれの歌に合わせた歌い方が素晴らしい
の一言に尽きます。

地上の星、については松山千春の意見に賛同するが、このアルバムの中では、２番目にいい。その他の曲は、古いファンの私には二番煎じにしかきこえない。
