バッハ最晩年の「フーガの技法」には使用楽器の指示がない。グールドは1962年にこの曲をなぜかパイプオルガンによって9曲だけ録音した。このディスクの前半がそれにあたる。きわめて非オルガン的な、奇妙な演奏である。まずオルガンにはつきものの空間性がまったくない。グールドは、これを録音するにあたり、オルガン用の楽譜ではなく、チェルニーがピアノ用に校訂した楽譜に足鍵盤の指定を自分で書き込んだものを使用したという。足鍵盤の使用は最小限に抑えられ、レガート奏法を徹底的に避け、楽器の送風音（コントラプンクトゥス第8番では、まるで教会の外を行き交う自動車の排気ガスのようにブーンと聞こえる）を目立たせる風変わりなマイクのセッティングを行った。楽器の機械音とはいえ、聴いていて気分が悪くなるようなノイズをわざと拾っているグールドの狙いは何なのか？ 聴けば聴くほど不思議な、まるで壊れた手回しオルガンのようにぎこちない味わい。グールドの残した録音中、最も「怪演」のひとつに数えられるものだ。
後半の「インヴェンションとシンフォニア」（抜粋）では、べたっとロマンティックにやるのではなく、さらりと駆け抜けるグールド流の風のようなバッハが満喫できる。音の数の少ない、平易で簡潔な音楽だけに、骨組みだけで本物の音楽を聴かせる真の芸術性が、この曲の演奏には要求される。グールドは、人間性とか信仰心とか、そういう古い思想的な要素からバッハの音楽を解放し、一種の知的な運動性、遊びの要素をここに見出したのかもしれない。和声を積み上げるよりは、2声や3声の旋律が対位法的な綾を明晰に織り成していく様はグールドの独壇場である。シンフォニア第9番ヘ短調の3声曲BWV795は、神技とも言える深い音楽で、透明度の高い湖の水面からはるか湖底を見下ろしたときに感じるような戦慄的な眩惑を与えてくれる。（林田直樹）
